Kiritimati is said to be the largest coral atoll on the planet. it has an area of 642
square kilometers, of which 323 sq km. is land, and the rest is lagoon. Kiritimati
represents almost half the total (817 sq km) area of the Republic of Kiribati,
an island nation of 33 islands, the capital of which is Tarawa,
3222 kilometers to the west.
