once the “cribsters” had established
the Enigma settings used to encrypt particular communications they provided
an electrical circuit to the “Bombe Room” where WREN operators “plugged up”
the circuit to the back of the Bombe machine. The machine would then carry out
an automatic search to find all of the Enigma rotor settings that would correctly
encipher the letters in the crib to give the corresponding letters in the cypher.
The Bombe would stop whenever a possible setting was found. One of these
settings would be part of the Enigma key. All of the others were due to the
effects of chance. The results of the runs were then returned for checking.
