Statement of Work

After many experiences in the business world, I decided to return to painting – in a serious way – about 12 years ago. No matter what else is said, it is NOT like riding a bicycle! I found that I had forgotten much more than what was remembered This sent me out to work with many other talented artists, and the best lesson imparted by more than a few was “do NOT forget your focal point”. What a simple message! How difficult to achieve…but I have always loved a challenge and continue to forge ahead. The good news is that there are myriad ways to success. For me, I look to color – and how it changes according to the light.

Most l of the landscapes are plein air paintings. While this has become a very popular term, many people don’t understand the absolute joy of painting outdoors. There are also plenty of bugs, sometimes WAY too much sun and, in one water scene, the real and actual experience of your easel toppling into the pond. Talk about a “hands on” experience!

The still life paintings are created from actual vignettes which I have set up in either my studio or back deck. I enjoy the “setting up” almost as much as creating the work itself; I view it as problem solving. In other words, I am looking for a certain type of tension and spatial relationship amongst these objects as well as hitting my high notes of light and dark.

All in all, I wish you as much happiness in viewing my work as I have had in creating it!
