In the Tai Dam village of Ban Nong Bua, Black Kao Toom is made for the upcoming New Year celebrations, coinciding with Chinese New year. Sticky rice is mixed with finely pounded charcoal from a selected tree, and litle pieces of pork fat, then wrapped in a banana leaf, and steamed in a big steamer.
