Mid June last year, I was invited to attend the Rocket Festival (Boun Bangfai) in Khlong Takrao village, Tha TaKiab, Chachoensao province, Thailand ตำบล คลองตะเกรา อำเภอ ท่าตะเกียบ ฉะเชิงเทรา I went there with my trusted guide and cultural advisor, Saengmanee Kraisin, or Nam. She features in a few of my other documentary stories about Thailand on my site, over the past few years. The rocket Festival is an old traditional festival, at the start of the rainy season, people build rockets to fire into the sky, to wake up the spirits and entice them to break the draught and start the rains, needed for planting the new crops. It has developed in many areas into more then just rocket launching, the first day there is an official opening ceremony attended by important provincial and local officials, which doubles as prize giving ceremony for local schools. In this case, my guide's daughter Aiko, age 6, received a prize for being top of her class. Many of the participants are dressed in very ornate and colourful clothing, and then take part in a parade together with a series of huge colourful floats on themes relating to tradition and myths. In Western eyes this is a bit like a Mardi Gras or carnival parade, lots of dancing, music, and fun. The second day, a fair is held on a huge piece of land outside the village, with rocket launching, a big stage with bands and dancers, a MotorCross, and a community market, with many stalls, and lots of food.
