In late 1982 and early 1983, the US Navy ship I was assigned to, the USS INCHON LPH-12,
spent several months cutting rectangles in the Mediterranean off the coast of Beirut, Lebanon.
These are pictures that were taken during this time.
I only recently came across these negatives again, and scanned them in Feb 07.
The shots that were taken in the city proper came about during an impromptu visit with
a local Lebanese family. They drove me to their apartment and gave me a tour of their
part of town. Unfortunately, I have lost any information which would include their names.
I regret that I do not have that information any more.
During another trip of assigned photography covering the marines stationed in Beirut,
I drove around in the back of a truck with a man named Capt. Dale Dye. I was still fairly
new to the military at this time and I had no idea who this man was or what he was about,
other than the fact that he was very personable and energetic.
It was on the date of the US Marine Corp "Birthday", and I remember
he was often shouting out "Happy Birthday Marine" as we came across marines during our trip.
I also remember the cool coffee cup he had which was a metal measuring cup with a
handmade wire handle.
Since that time we have all seen his name and face many times because of his involvement
as an actor and also a military adviser for Hollywood. I enjoyed meeting you Capt. Dye.
