Born in Shrewsbury, Charles Darwin, the father of evolutionary biology, spent much of his youth in Northern Wales. Ironically, he has been described as a lazy young man and a slow learner in school. At first he was educated at home by his sister, Caroline; then, between ages 9 to 16, his father sent him to a boys' boarding school in Shrewsbury, where he was reportedly bored and spent much of his time hiking and reading. Later, encouraged by his father, Darwin entered medical school in Edinburgh, but towards the end of his second year there it became apparent that once again Darwin was not taking his studies seriously. In April 1827 Darwin quit medical school for good and returned home to Shrewsbury to a father who was very concerned about what to do with his "lazy" son. Little did his father know that his son was to become the most highly respected naturalist of the 19th century.
