I ran across "One time for the cow" when I was living in Chicago in the mid '70s. It instantly went to my top ten list and has stayed there ever since.

Oh and BTW, the song Thank You Mr. Fender, was recorded at Terry Morgan's studio. Just Smith and I on 2 flat tops

Yes, I did help Doris with the cassette tapes. After reading your comment, Sandra, I have to correct you in saying that the song I sang on Live at the Stables, was not just "thrown in" as u put it. Smith asked me if I would do that song, just he and I. We were at Park Studio in Tupelo, Ms. Although, by your comment afterwards saying, "Not too fabulous, either.", I take it you didnt like the song. But all of the musicians in the studio, including Tony Bain, and several others, thought is was more than "faboulous"! This song was titled Tough One, written by myself and Smith. This was a very special memory to me! (emphasis on the word WAS)

Within the next month, I am going to have "Smith Vinson & Friends Live At The Stables" cassette tapes available for sale on ebay. They will be $20.00 + shipping. If anyone is interested, check it out.

I am also going to check with Playboy Records regarding getting some CD's of Smith's "One Time For The Cow" album.

A year ago I bought a near-mint One Time for the Cow and recorded it to CD. If it's out of print, I wonder if it would be okay to share? If so, I don't mind sharing with the previous poster.

Smith Vinson was my wonderfully, talented brother. When he found out in March, 1996 that he had cancer, he and some friends, recorded a "Live At The Stables" album at The Stables Restaurant & Bar in Tupelo. It was done on cassette. He wanted the recording to be made into cassettes so that his wife Doris and their daughter, Heather, would have some extra income after he was gone. He died in June, 1996, and a friend, David Smith, helped Doris have the cassettes done. The album is live, except for three songs, "Key to My Kingdom", which Smith had written for Doris several years before, and "Thank You Mr. Fender", which he recorded at their home about 2 months prior to his death. The third song is one written and sung by David Smith, which David sort of "threw in" on Smith's album. Not too fabulous, either. Anyway, I happen to have some of those cassettes at my home. They are "new", still in the plastic wrap. Smith wanted to sell them for $10 each, so if anyone is interested, I'll be happy to sell you one or two or three + shipping, if applicable. Of course, the money will still go to to Doris. My e-mail address is sanchristian@comcast.net.

Kenneth, you have done some very remarkable photography through the years. Don't ever put your camera down!!

Ken , my brother has a copy of "One Time for The Cow" which we put to CD but the quality is poor. Is it available on CD that I could purchase? If so please let me know where. My brother and I have friends in Tupelo and he tried to purchase his album for Smith Vinson. but my brother would not sell, thanks for replying. Jim

Jim, yes this is the same Smith Vinson. I was the sound engineer on the album "One Time for the Cow" which featured the songs you mentioned and which was, to the best of my knowledge, the only album recorded that featured Smith as lead singer. He did, however, play guitar, sing background, and helped to write songs for three other albums that I know of: "Black Jack Davy" featuring David Lee Daniels, "Doc Kirby & Co" featuring Pat Malone, and "Boppin' Through The Milky Way" featuring Tim Tutor." (I also engineered those albums.) All four of these albums were released on Playboy Records in the mid 1970s. They were recorded at Trace Recording Studio in Tupelo, Mississippi, on used equipment from Sun Records in Memphis. Sam Philips, owner of Sun Records, was one of the co-owners of Trace Recording Studio along with Ray Harris, previously of Hi Records in Memphis, who produced all four of these albums. Incidentally, I also took the photo that was used on the cover of the "One Time for the Cow" album:http://www.pbase.com/kchristi/image/79091538 -- Ken
