I visited Fanning Island in 1962 when it was just a coconut plantation under Mr. Palmer and a chap named Fleetwood. We were a U.S. Navy ship sent there to advise the inhabitants that the U.S. was going to be conducting nuclear testing in the vicinity. We anchored outside the lagoon and took a small boat into the plantation. Mr. Palmer regaled us with stories of the island, including the German ship that stopped in to destroy the underwater cable facility. The Germans disconnected the cable from the shore and drug it out to sea. When they left, one of the locals did a free dive and retrieved the cable end.

Greetngs from South Africa. First of all I wish to thank you for the beautitiful photos of a beautiful place. I wish I can visit places like that. Maybe one day when my ship docks! Hi Kenneth. I agree completely with Pat and m boring. I was also on the NCL cruise in February 2008. The people there really need help from us. People who want to help them can send benifit to www.Pacificecaremissions.org so the people who works there can buy medicins and food to the babies to bring to Fanning in December 2008. Your pictures are beautiful and just like it was. bja

Hi Kenneth, I was on the NCL cruise before you it sounds like...the one February 2008. I noticed the smiles on all the people's faces and realized they were showing us "things" do not make us happy. Yes they looked happy. They sang to us, I noticed mostly Christian songs. But, you did not mention the life expentancy is 40 yrs old for women and 50 for men. You did not mention most of the people missing teeth or have black dead teeth at their young ages because anywhere they must drink brackish water, water mixed with sea water, it eats up the enamal and calcium of bones my dentist here said. The baby's have a 35% chance of survival for one year due to the lack of nutrients in the mothers milk (they desparately need baby formula which is all that is needed for survival of most of these babies). They eat only fish and coconuts and too much sugarcane to make the water palatable--leading to high amount of diabetes there. With only 3 nurses and no physicians, no way to do surgery and now no help from Norweigen Cruise Lines who at least brought a doctor....they have not had this help for over half a year. Several groups in the US are trying to help them. One is www.pacificcaremissions.org. who took medical supplies when ships were going but it is not very difficult to get there with anything. One woman needed a c-section and they cannot do that on Fanning. They finally put here on a boat taking 20 hours tossing in the Pacific Ocean to Christman Island where there is one doctor who could do it when they could locate him on that larger island, but it was too late. Right now Christmas Island has one oxygen tank, as of Aug 08, they are saving it for surgery or any emergency. They do have a little more medical there, but definitely not much. I just happend upon your site as I am working in the US to raise awareness and help for the Fanning people...living in Paradise for sure...but dying too soon. Your pictures are beautiful and just like it was. I would love to go back!!

I had the rare opportunity of visiting Fanning Island in April of 2008. I found the people to be happy despite of their way of life of which they do not know any different. A beautiful place but wouldn't want to stay there. I was glad to get back to my ship Pride of Aloha.

Thanks, Gus. The only electricity is from batteries and a few emergency generators.
