India

Spent 10 days in India, all in New Delhi except for a day trip to Agra, home of the Taj Mahal. An amazing, life changing journey- I learned so much. India is a study of contrasts, where you see 21st Century technology juxtaposed with centuries old traditions- the most stunning was seeing a cart steered by camels en route to Agra.

India has more millionares then America, yet about 75% of the people live below the poverty line. There is no welfare system, and many are incredibly poor. I was surprised to see the prices- there seems to be two Indias, one for the rich and middle class, another for the poor. The price of real estate in New Delhi is comparable to New York City (supply and demand) and nice restaurants and coffee shops are just as expensive as it is here. Yet you can also buy food on the street or small eateries for two dollars for a full meal. Hair cuts at a local barber is also under a dollar, as is getting a bike rickshaw ride.

They say that if you make good money, you can live like a king in India. It's common to have a car and driver, housekeeper and a butler. There are generally five cars across in a three lane road, no one pays attention to street lights, people merge in heavy traffic, cows suddenly appear, and drivers pass from the rear- if someone's in your way, you just honk away and they'll move over from you. Not to mention they drive on the left side of the road. It's quite wild actually, because the drivers aren't rude either.

I found the people very nice and very real, free of pretentions. I was lucky enough to meet some amazing people, surgeons from Apollo hospital that Anne is Managing Director of, a three star general, priests, and the personal secretary of the Dalai Lama. Most conversations veered to religion, specifically Hinduism and Buddhism. India is about 80% hindu, 15% moslem, 2% buddhist, and 3% Christian (or thereabouts). India's philosophy is like a wagon wheel- they feel like there are many paths to god, that there's god and a light inside you. India is known to be very accepting of all religions, and many times you'll see Hindus study Buddhism (they feel it is a form of Hinduism) or celebrate Christmas.

As a westerner, we got a lot of attention- while walking down the road we felt all eyes on us, more a curiosity then anything. We also got a lot of people coming up to us to sell something or to beg for money. Unfortunately the city of Delhi is filled with extreme poverty and pollution, and when they see a westerner they assume we have money. One of the things that was really disconcerting were the beggers, mainly young children, that would come up to our car windows when we were stuck in traffic and rap on the windows and smile and beg for food. On the other hand, I also met amazing children while photographing, who would compete for attention in taking their picture.

The art and color in India is everywhere, from trucks that are painted individually, to lovely saris and shawls, to the majestic monuments, to the crafts and art. We spent a great deal of time in the National Art Gallery, and were thrilled to see amazing works of art from India- the sculpture could compete with any ancient greek sculpture (you can see the influence actually) and the minature paintings from the 1600s were mind boggling gorgeous. I feel bad that I was never exposed to this amazing artwork before, but feel very fortunate that I know about it now.

I know I got only a taste of India by being in Delhi, and I would love the opportunity to see other parts of India for a complete picture. Being from New York, I know that New York City is nothing like the rest of America and I wouldn't want people that visit the city think that the rest of the country is like that city, since it isn't.
