This grew out of a photo project on Usefilm.com - the subject was eggs. It took me back to a college drawing class in which we spent several weeks drawing nothing but eggs. The instructor told us that if we could master the nuances of color, shape and light by drawing eggs, we could draw anything. He was pretty much correct -- it's an excellent exercise to get you to SEE the subject, the play of light upon it, the natural luminescence of the shell.
That's an excellent suggestion, Rob. In my first drawing class, my teacher had us do something similar --- first, we drew nothing but eggs for the first couple of weeks (which motivated this gallery), and then we graduated to paper bags for another couple of weeks. Both sets of exercises taught us how to render the subtleties of light and shadow. Stay tuned for the bag gallery!
Karen - Great project, I think I'll give it a try. I got another one for you that I had to do while attending R.I.T. for a degree in Photography.
Assignment Title: "10 Extraordinary Photographs of a Brown Paper Bag".
It was a very difficult assignement, but the final results were amazing (note that about 75% of the class failed the project - I was not one of them). My professor was Kerry Stuart Coppin. Google his name for more info.
