laughing gull. one foot missing

Bunche Beach in Fort Myers, Florida

... the poor thing was probably caught in fishing line and the foot was starved for
blood; there's plenty of monofilament fishing line festooning our beaches and river banks...

Canon EOS 20D ,Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM
1/2000s f/5.6 at 400.0mm iso400 full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

Another great shot with that long lens.

Wow -- the poor fellow. He's sure making the best of it, but that's too bad. Do you think maybe a seal or some large fish might have done this? (not that the filament explanation isn't too often true, I'm sure). Great shot.

People just don't think and are so trashy.

This is a beautiful shot and he seems to be getting along okay.

A sad but true possibility.

I can't tell you how many gulls I see like this. I never quite understood how it happened, but your explanation makes sense. Sad, really. But a good capture here!

Beautiful image, but so sad!

I've just ordered 100-400L for my 20D. Hope it's nearly as sharp as this!

Great shot! Poor bird!

Great shot but sad.

Get real!! Florida is built on government handouts!! Subsidized water for sugar and beach "renourishment" to name just two...of course, no area of my country tops the west for government (read taxpayer) handouts.

Overcoming adversity without government handouts... The Florida way! Excellent detail.

Nice and sharp image. I have seen shore birds with one crippled foot here too.
they seem to be able to survive.

Oh dear :-( He seems to be healthy otherwise.
