There is only one Everglades in all the world. About half of the original Everglades have been lost. Pollution from fertilizers and pesticides degrade the water and cause invasive cattails that prevent wading birds from landing in what was once a wet sedge prairie.
Although the state of Florida and the federal government have reached a kind of accord on preservation and restoration of this unique ecosystem, there have been efforts to delay the cleanup; this effort is financed mainly by the big sugar interests here in Florida. Your tax dollars get abused by big sugar in two ways: you pay higher prices to buy sugar due to tariffs on foreign sugar and you pay to restore the Everglades because of environmental damage done by sugar producers. All in the name of product that is also not very good for us.
