Automeris Moth Caterpillar

This is one of those caterpillars you can look at, but wouldn't want to touch. Those spiky projections are like tiny syringes waiting to inject the skin of anyone who touches them. We've touched a few species in Arizona and it caused some swelling and burning in the skin. Apparently some tropical species are toxic enough to cause serious problems, and even death in small children.
