Unfortunately we had the shorter focal length macro lens on the camera for butterfly shots at the time, so the bird in this image is a little small. But if you look closely you can see here how the white patch behind the eye on this east Mexico subspecies is much larger than it is in the Oaxaca populations. We were able to find two of the three subspecies of these guys on our trip, and they were obviously different-looking in regard to the size of the white spot behind the eye.
