This delicate squirrel cuckoo conveniently posed for a photo showing the regional difference between individuals of this species which reside along the Atlantic slope and into southern Mexico, where they show a distinctive black-and-white undertail pattern. Squirrel cuckoos in the western portions of Mexico (Pacific slope birds) have a rich, but slightly less regal-looking rufous-and-white undertail pattern. Perhaps one day, a Pacific slope Squirrel Cuckoo will pose as nicely for us to grab a similar comparison shot.
