In Iwate prefecture of northen Japan, the farmers would the farmers celebrate and show-off their horses after finishing the hard labour of the rice-planting. After gathering in Takizawa village the horses were decked out with bells and ridden to Morioka city by the farmers' children. Although planting is now mechanised the horses are still kept and the custom is followed every year. The children, too, seem very comfortable on horseback.
