San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in Irvine, Orange County.
When we arrived there were already a dozen birders on the bird. The bird was actively foraging on the muddy shores of pond C. The muddy feet prevented us from documenting the webbing (or lack of) between the toes but other field marks were clearly seen. The bird did not vocalize while we were there. This bird was originally identified by Jeff Bray and Bruce Aird.
Third time's a Charm! After chasing this species last week in Plum Island (MA) and last year at Abbott's Lagoon (CA) the 7 hour drive to Irvine was well worth it.
Within the ABA area its breeding range includes some islands in the high Canadian Arctic and a very few also breed in St Lawrence Island (AK).
Photo-lifer # 698 in the continental ABA area.
