Hi, apologies, but I am hoping to hold onto the SCF figures especially since I spent a lot of effort getting some of the individual pieces. You may wanna try ebay?

Hi Bro! Nice collection you got there. I do admire your TF collection for I am also a TF fan growing up. Although I've just started collecting three years ago, I'm still a long way off from ammassing such toy wealth such as yours! I particularly am delighted your a MASK fan as well. I've been trying to find vintage toys like yours for a while since I almost destroyed all of mine as a kid, *sigh* well. I guess I have to live with the fact that this search is never gonna end. I commend you on your purchases bro, more power to ya! You are an inspiration to collectors like me, everywhere in the world.!!! =)

Of course I don't mind! On the contrary, I'm honoured!
Truthfully though, there are many, many other great pictures that were taken by others with the same camera. My pictures are nothing compared to those!

Anyway, I've tried to access your homepage several times, but apparently, your allocated bandwidth is exceeded. You may want to consider getting a paid server instead.
Keith Lim 16-Sep-2003 10:51
Hi Julien, your gallery is marvellous, and I took the liberty of putting your homepage link on my new homepage. Hope you don't mind; but if you do, let me know and I'll take it off. My homepage address is:http://www.geocities.com/b5gallery/. Do visit and give me your comments on the photos I took on my F717. I'm just a novice, so any comments are welcomed. :)

Thanks Tom!
Just realised that you are Dutch; I missed The Netherlands so much!
My parents used to work there (Veldhoven, near Eindhoven) and I flew over to visit them now and then, with my last trip being 11 years ago!!
Your beautiful pictures of Holland will certainly bring back joyous memories! Thank you!

Hello, my compliments for your nice photos!
Please come see my photo sometime?

Basically, all you need to do is to highlight the Drop Shadow Frame action and click the triangle, "Play Selection" at the bottom.
Guest 30-Jun-2003 16:38
Hi there, Sorry to trouble you time and again. I went to PS, managed to find the actions->drop shadow frame but there is a lot of other features below it. Can you guide me through the last step more specified? Thanks.
Julien Chiang29-Jun-2003 22:37
That would be the Frame with drop shadow. Very simple actually, Just go to Actions, load the Frames.atn, look for Drop Shadow Frame, and just click it. :)
Guest 29-Jun-2003 17:23
hi there, just wanna know how you create your layer for your pics.i mean the white background that go with ur pics with th fading out black in between.hope you get wat i toking.not good in expressing.hehe...
i tried new layer from PS but nothing happen.
sigh......i was only looking for something to go with my pic to look more presentable in pbase.
Julien Chiang24-Jun-2003 12:30
Sorry for misleading you pal.
I wasn't using a 37mm nd filter, I was actually using a 72mm nd8 which fits my Nikon WA lens as well as my Nikon TC via a step-up ring.
You can actually screw in another step-up ring, say, 37 -> 52/55/58mm and use that latter sized filters instead.
The disadvantage though is that you won't be able to use the optical viewfinder.
I was using my uv filter this way cos there ain't any 37mm uv filter.
Guest 23-Jun-2003 13:12
hi fella.i had a hard time trying to get a hold on the nd8 filter(37mm).may i know where you had yours?37mm filters are hard to find.any place you recommend other than AP,CP and MScolor?
Julien Chiang16-Jun-2003 12:09
Thank you xiong!
You mentioned that you have the adapter, is it the same as the one from www.ckcpower.com?
If it is, great!
I personally do not recommend 28mm filters, especially the polariser. I was using a 28 -> 37mm step-up ring and 37mm filters instead. Reason is the adapter really makes it inconvenient to use 28mm sized filters.
I don't think there are different types of polariser (unless you are talking about the linear or circular polariser), but the most common is the circular polariser and I recommend the brand Tokina, mainly because they are affordable, same quality as Hoya and comes with their own circular plastic cases.
Have fun!
Guest 15-Jun-2003 18:13
your v3 pics are the best that i have seen.did you use 28mm thread size fliters?how much are they and what type you recommend?i got the adapter for it.for the lenses i think quite ex so not getting it for the moment.are there different type of polariser in the market?i was interested in ur hill street junction pic.maybe i should get the nd8 fliter too.adding in what polariser?pls enlight me.thanks.
Julien Chiang08-Jun-2003 06:27
Thank you very much! ;)
Yep, the colour of the sky is further enhance by the circular polarizer.
The LCD, even though is a 1.5", is sufficient to display the effects pretty well.
You'll be able to see the darkening and increased concentration of the colours physically well.
chyeheng07-Jun-2003 14:33
Julien, very beautiful shots you got. I like the A Day in the City a lot with very interest angle and wow the sky color is so blue. Is that the effect of the NR/Polarizer filter effect? How do you adjust a circular polarizer with a tiny LCD?
Julien Chiang12-May-2003 22:26
Unfortunately, there's no way to decrease the shutter speed on the v3...
You just gotta hold the cam stable or invest in a tripod.
You may also wish to use the flash.
james 12-May-2003 20:57
Hi, me again, thanks for your help. I wonder if you could also tell me how you decrease the shutter time on the V3. I know how to increase it by going into manual and selecting night mode but I dont know how to decrease it. I noticed all my photos have different shutter times, does the camera just select one automatically, it always seems awfully slow in manual mode to the point that a lot of my photos come out blurry. Thanks

please could you tell me how you get that front and rear focus effect with the Ixus V3, do you have to fix the focus first and if so what is the best way to do so? Thanks!
Julien Chiang03-Apr-2003 13:23
Thank you for your compliments Jorge.
In my opinion, the S400 is a better DIGITAL CAMERA.
Note the caps, as the video quality is inferior to the S230, but hey, this is a digital camera after all.
If you are going to get external accessories for the cam, at the moment, ckcpower.com does not have an adapter for the S400, so you may want to hold on to your decision for a while.
IMO, having accessories do expand your cam's ability.
The S300 is too big for me as I like my camera small. ;)
If I'm in your shoes, I'll email ckcpower to be assured that they'll come out with an adapter for the S400 and head to the nearest retailer for one.
Otherwise, I'll stick to the V3, for it's expandability as well as the lower price.

Hope this helps.

Hi Julien, very nice pictures ..thank you for sharing them. ..I am in the process of looking for a camera for a long time. It is very confusing this wil be my first Digital Camera I went to Best Buy and saw the s400, how do you feel about it? I believe you use the 230, I have a friend that has the s300 and loves it. Can you help me out?...Please e-mail me at

Thank you!
The kenko's purpose is primarily to provide extra "zoom" to the v3's pathetic 2x zoom.
You'll be able to see from some of my pics that having that much zoom comes in handy sometimes.
Learn more from :http://www.ckcpower.com
You'll be able to find the prices there too.
I bought mine @ S$200 2nd hand from a friend.
Pls note that you will first need the adapter to be able to attach anything at all to the ixus.

To learn abt filters, spend some time looking at the pics here :

Regarding posting in CS, maybe you should ask the moderators via email/pm or something.
Am afraid I can't help you with that.

Have a nice day!

Impressive pics you toke with ur V3. I am also a V3 user and i am kinda of newbie. This V3 that i am having is my first Digital Cam. I would like to know about lens and filters. Help me! hehee...
1)What is the main use of the Kenko 8x monoscope? how much does it cost?
2)Filter are for?
3)Btw, you know how to post msg on CS? i have registered and they don't seems to allow me to post any msg on any of the forum..kinda of anxious to share some pics that i took.
Thanks in advance!
Julien Chiang13-Mar-2003 15:50
Thank you for your overwhelming compliments!
I use the LCD screen for most of my shots.
The only times I use the viewfinder are when I'm taking shots in near total darkness (LCD shows nothing), and during panning shots.
Lilian 13-Mar-2003 15:06
Hi Julien

I must say I am very impressed with the quality of the shots you've taken with the V3. Its certainly the photographer & not the camera :) Btw, do u use the LCD or optical viewfinder for the majority of your shots?
Julien Chiang13-Mar-2003 11:32
Close to a hundred sing dollars.
Rates will be based on the bank of the credit card you used to pay.
And got to add in shipping and handling charges.
You should email them and ask how much S&H will be cos I totally forgot.
Then get the total amount and multiply by about 1.9 and you shouldn't be paying more than that.
Guest 13-Mar-2003 11:24
And can you pls highlight how is the currency converted?
lets say only buying the adapter, how much will it be?
Julien Chiang12-Mar-2003 16:23
I know... saw your pics, quite noisy, what did you set for your iso? I personally keeping it at 50. And the first thing you need to get is a tripod. :)

The adapter is 28mm threaded. It's ONLY available in the website I mentioned earlier.

The rest of the accessories, with the exception of the kenko monoscope, can be found in any of the local shops.
Guest 12-Mar-2003 15:47
Seriously, didnt know V3 can have such fancy add ons!
Just pick up photography so plenty of things to learn
by the way wats the diameter for the add on lens used for the attachment
and where can i get the V3 attachment housing? CP? MS colour?
Julien Chiang10-Mar-2003 09:36
Didn't notice if I have the same LCD corners problem. Probably not though.
Can't help with the developing either cos I've never printed any of my pics.
Generally, the LCD shows a more correct size the the viewfinder.
You can experiment easily though; just take a couple of pics and note what you can see from the LCD and viewfinder and compare to the downloaded pics.

THe main thing you will need is the adapter. And no, it isn't available locally. Even if you have a sample and get the industrial people to fabricate, it'll cost S$80+ if you buy in bulk... I've already asked. Furthermore, you won't be guaranteed as good a quality. There are aftermarket brands of wide-angle lens that are probably cheaper, but I'm personally using the Original Nikon one. It costs about S$200 brand new.

Photoshop is, in my opinion, one of the best software for photo/image editing, but it's really difficult to use. I would suggest you get Photoshop Elements instead. Personally, I'm using Paintshop Pro. As for how to get the software, I'm afraid you have to look for them yourself, either full licensed ones, or... you know...
Guest 10-Mar-2003 04:43
hello,it's me again.
1)i think i got a problem with my lcd.the four corners are slightly darker than the center and when i send in to lab for develop, the pics turns out more smaller, around 90%of wat is in the lcd.i don't know why, maybe the lab no gd.do you experience these problems?is it better for me to use the viewfinder?both are different.my viewfinder and lcd size seem different.
2)i was very impressed with the wide angle converter.how do i go about to purchase them.the site you recommend "ckcpower",how do i convert the currency?i think need to buy adapter also rite?singapore not selling?
3)where can i buy photoshop?i saw at pasar malam, can those do?
hope you could answer my questions.
thanks in advances
regards,louis

Thanks David!

"To do the B&W with colour shot, first you gotta lasso the particular area you want the effect to be. Use the magnetic lasso and blow up the pic to simplify this process.

After that, do a "Inverse Selection", followed by a "Desaturate" found under Image -> Adjustment."

The above is quoted directly from my response to prostistudent. :P
By the way, the program used is PhotoShop.

Cheers!

great photos and I intend to upgrade to the new Ixus. Briefly how do you get the effect of a black& white image on a coloured background or a coloured image on a black and white background.? Is this done with layers ? Thanks in advance

Julien Chiang04-Mar-2003 16:04
Unfortunately, no. But with the 10sec timer feature, it ain't really necessary.
Guest 04-Mar-2003 13:40
thanks dude.i learn alot today.hehe...
anyway,is there a remote for v3?
Julien Chiang04-Mar-2003 08:59
Glad that I'm able to give you some kind of an eye-opener. :D

Basically, wide-angle lens enables the cam to capture a wider picture than it actually can. Take a look at my JBP waterfall pics :

http://www.pbase.com/image/13508144
The above pic is taken without any wide-angle lens,

http://www.pbase.com/image/13508140
The above, though, is taken WITH the help of wide-angle lens.
Both are taken from almost the same position.
One thing to take note though is that you'll tend to get distortions at both ends (notice the top and bottom of pic).

http://www.pbase.com/image/12959733
Here's another pic with wide-angle lens attached. Without it, I'll only be able to take a 3-pillar shot instead of this 5 pillar one.

Teleconverter is actually "add-on zoom" to increase the capability of your cam. I have a Nikon 2x teleconverter, and with it, it basically increase the zoom capability of the v3 to a 4x (140mm).

The monoscope gaves the same ability as the teleconverter. Disadvantage is that it works like a pair of binoculars, in that you gotta turn the scope manually to get a clear pic... (unlike the conventional teleconverter, which is one fixed lens)
The Kenko scope I have adds 8x to the cam, bringing it's zoom ability to a whopping 560mm (16x). It ain't easy to use though... takes plenty of time to fix up and focus...

All these stuff costs plenty of dough, more than you imagine... check outhttp://www.ckcpower.com. You need the adapter for the Ixus before you can start fixing anything to it at all. If you just wanna style up the v3, I suggest you spend the $ elsewhere... it ain't cheap. ;)

Light trails are easy. Just get a tripod, set your shutter speed up hig, wait for the correct moment and just press away! I have the help of a nd8 filter and 2 polarisers to really darken the original scene so that I can crank my shutter up all the way to 15 secs to get the extra light trails (more cars pass by in 15 secs compared to 3-4 secs ya see. ;) )

Gee... I guess I've been pretty long-winded... cheers and enjoy your v3 pal!
Guest 04-Mar-2003 07:53
hi there.i was amazed at some of ur shots.i din even notice that v3 can take such wonderful pics.btw, wide angle converter, teleconverter, monoscope.just what effect does they have on our pics and how much does they cost?seem quite stylo to have something up on my v3.and 1 more thing.how do you make the light trail on the hill street junction pic.
regards,
louis
Julien Chiang03-Mar-2003 10:50
Hi prostistudent, thank you very much.

You've got a cool cam there. Personally I dig Canon, just waiting for S400 to be out in the local market. ;)

The B&W with colour shot is edited via photoshop, unfortunately... given the limited abilities of my cam, I believe it's the only way to get this effect. The sepia shots are shot direct with the cam though.

To do the B&W with colour shot, first you gotta lasso the particular area you want the effect to be. Use the magnetic lasso and blow up the pic to simplify this process.

After that, do a "Inverse Selection", followed by a "Desaturate" found under Image -> Adjustment.

Good luck!
prostistudent 03-Mar-2003 05:39
Hi Julien,

I have recently purchased a Minolta Dimage Xi, and have taken some brilliant pictures with it (even if I do say so myself). I've done a 360 degree panorama of my work lab, 3D images of my apartment, and some cool rock climbing & nature shots. But how do you do that B&W overlayed with colour and sepia shooting stuff? I can understand if you shoot the whole picture in colour, take it home and Photoshop it, but it looks like it's almost done onboard the camera... Like you've taken two pictures. If it is 'Photoshopped' then it's very well done, congratulations.

See ya,
prostistudent.
Julien Chiang01-Mar-2003 21:15
Hi Alvin, thanks for you comments.

All night pics were taken with the V3, when the LCD is dim at night, doesn't mean it's poorly lit. You can set it's compensation, and most cams are like that except for the Sony 707/717 which has night shot capabilities.

2x optical zoom sucks, but if you are willing to spend some $, you'll be able to get whatever additional zoom you need via adapter. However, V3's replacement is already out, the S400 has 3x optical which is common among most cams. You have to remember that zoom isn't everything.

Personally, I've zero experience with the Minolta. Maybe you can compare both cams fromhttp://www.dpreview.com and make a better choice after that?

The night shots posted in pbase is acutally pretty poor... too noisy (look at the night sky and you can see white little dots/patches), I gotta re-take them some day...

Have a look at the owl shots in the JBP gallery though, I'm particularl proud of them, since the place is actually so dark that nothing show up on the LCD.

Last piece of advice, just get whichever cam you like. All cams have it's pros and cons. Good luck!
Alvin 01-Mar-2003 19:56
Helo there, I'm also a Singaporean. Right now considering to buy either the V3 or the Minolta Dimage Xi. What's your expert take? I'm disappointed with only a 2x optical zoom but I've tried the Xi and night shots seem to pose some focusing problems and thus distortions.
Both these cameras work well in the day, but at night, I've tried a V2 and the camera LCD display is very poorly lit. Do you face this problem with your v2 and v3? Your night shots are very well taken... were all these taken with the v3? wow.
Hope to hear from ya! :D
