In July 2004 I had a chance to test several digital camera for a technology magazine in Singapore and Malaysia.
The nightshot comparison shows a clear difference of digital camera sensors and in-camera image processing capability.
The picture shown below is a crop on the same area from original file with at their native resolution. No digital manipulation or retouch done on the pictures, all straight from the camera.
The methodology used in this comparison:
camera mounted on tripod and using the available kit lens
set the camera to the minimum available ISO number
set the camera to manual mode
set the exposure time to maximum number available (before Bulb)
set the aperture as narrow as possible to achieve Ev = 0
set the White Balance to Auto
set the picture resolution to maximum available number
While this method may not be the ideal way of testing and comparing digital cameras, this is the best option we have at the time of testing. Full EXIF data is available on each picture below.
