Focus Test

Comparing focus, or miss focus, as a source of un-sharp images. The Nikon 16-85mm has consistently under performed on the D3200 (24mp) compared to the D300 (12mp). Is is the lens or the phase detection focusing system? The latter's mirror elements are prone to misalignment which leads one to suspect the entry level D3200 despite it's top notch Sony fabricated sensor. The D3200's 18-55mm kit lens is compared to the 16-85 at a nominal 55mm focal length. After half the photos the lenses were exchanged between the bodies, starting the 16-85 on the D3200. Comparative images were taken with both lenses, albeit on one body or the other.
Note: three types of images for each comparative set of photos. Uncropped, cropped to taste and 100% crop for five images per set. An asterisk denotes the D3200 body in the side-by-side 100% crops.
