How To Use An Indian Toilet

If anyone has been to India, undoubtedly this is a question that we have all found ourselves asking. Luckily, while visiting a bar in Kovalum, Kerala, they had the decency to explain this for us layfolk. Now, I have been to India three times and this is still something of a mystery for me (note: I admittedly cruised around with a nice wad of toilet paper in my pocket or day pack). I hope that this happy little illustration can clarify the matter. Enjoy. (Also keep in mind that this is comparatively speaking a very nice bathroom compared to most that you encounter while backpacking around India...)

I really appreciate the string of comments that I get on this site. If you visit this link, please do leave comments as we all enjoy them and it gives us all perspective on a variety of views regarding this popular matter.

Indian toilets are indeed disgusting and nasty. You should visit the government run public toilets,You will puke on the roads if you even enter these public toilets.Most of the Indian males are filthy,unhygenic people without any decency. They spit on the roads,Throw litter everywhere in the streets,And they stare in a "offensive" way at girls and every other passer by they see on the roads..They are uncivilized in every imaginable way.If you are planning to visit India, I advise you against it. It won't be worth the money you will be spending, You will probably end up sick when you return to your country.

I don't have a problem with this type of toilet. I just wish that people living in the western world wouldn't leave shoe prints on western toilet seats. Because the excrement ends up on the seat, floor and everywhere. Plus the toilet seats were not designed for feet, but rather butts, so the seats end up broken off the toilets. Also, many forget that western toilets require to be flushed after every use.

Really, I didn't even bother to read the whole thing after reading a few comments. Anyway, what's the point of arguing about it? I'm an Indian, still living in India, I appreciate the old Indian ways but don't think western style is a disgrace. They have their own comfort level and people have their own in India, I personally use western toilets but with water and toilet paper. For ofcourse my own comfort. Is this really worth arguing about? You can use what you find more comfortable and stfu about it perhaps? Both are hygienic if used properly. The end.

I was searching for any graphics on how to use toilets to educate young children and adults..I am putting together public awareness campaign to educate even grown ups to use western toilets for instance. Many of our young people are travelling internationally. Above all to maintain clean tiolets. This was very useful exmapl . i went to india for 2 weeks and i only saw wesstern toilets in Bombay and fort Aguada in Goa . we stayed 2 weeks . i had a fabuluous time and the food was so good i had to go back home in Indian clothes (shalwar kamees tailored for me in 24 hours so comfy and beautiful . ) i would love to go back again . I'm from Miami FL and been to india recently.....i've tried indian toilet at my friends home for over a month... the experiance was initially strange....later i realized its very comfortable...you dont have to groan or moan pushing out cos the position is very natural...and using hand is obviousy more better way to clean...and I never really got any shit on my hand even once may be because you keep water splashing on....that keeps your hand clean all the time... never did i felt my cornhole so relaxed ever before.............. and feeling there after was really soothing unlike a paper wipe. Once you give it a try, i guess you kind of get addicted to the soothing feeling....

To those people who don't think this is a good way to clean their asses I recommend you wait until you get hemorrhoids before passing judgement. Toilet paper is a huge waste of resources and rough on your cornhole, it also doesn't do a good job at removing dingleberries. How upsetting to read so many negative posts. I am an American who has been in India for 4 months this year. If you're going to travel to a different country you need to educate yourself about their customs and cultures. I admit that I still struggle with the Indian toilet (mostly because I lack the strength in my leg muscles from sitting on my lazy American rear end for 30 years). My struggle does not have to do with the method of cleaning though. My best friend is Indian and he thinks that those of us who use paper to wipe are not being hygeinic. He asked how do we ensure that we are getting all fecal matter off if we aren't washing after each movement. There is a reason why in the USA we have the term "skidmarks" about our guy's undies. Everyone needs to relax. You do things your way and let others do things their way. There is no wrong way... just different. For those of you commenting on the water quality, think about big cities like New York and Chicago where they tell you that tap water is potable but not of drinking quality - Hello Brita anyone? It is the same in India. The water in homes is perfectly safe for washing with but must be purified before drinking. I brush my teeth with tap water here and I'm perfectly healthy. And before you start saying "oh American - probably in a big name hotel" I am staying in Guest Houses and with my friends in their homes which most certainly is not a 5-star hotel. I was thinking, what if you step into one of these nasty bathrooms and you get naked from the waist down cuz even though it's poopy - you gotta go. And as you're about to squat over this thing - you SLIP! OMG. Can you imagine slipping in a room like that half naked??? With just a hose that isn't guaranteed to have water in it?? faints Also, GASP persona_4g93, dude - you actually DIP the toilet tissue IN the TOILET BOWL WATER and then WIPE YOUR ASS with it??? I never heard something so gross in my life. That's even worse than this post. BUY SOME WIPES! They're like what - 0.99 cents?? They're sold EVERYWHERE in the west and they come in a RESEALABLE pack so they're portable! We ALL get that water is cleaner - NO ONE HERE IS DISPUTING THAT. What people are GROSSED out about - and rightly so - is that you are using your HAND. Damn the water! It's the hand we have a problem with and I know you all understand that. If you're in ANY western country - there's NO WAY you can justify putting your hand in your ass to wipe away your feces because there's too many products we make where you don't need to do that - EVER. And anyone who argues against that needs to just come out and admit that they just like putting the hand in their ass and playing with their anus. And all you people touting EAT with your right hand - uhm... hello, just use your brain for a sec... anyone can EAT with one hand, but how many of you COOK with one hand??? light bulb switches on EX...ACTLY. None of you. If you can't do it - that can't either. Imagine how many cooks a restaurant would have to hire if everyone only used their right hand in the kitchen! Think about it - in the west, you get mad if you see your lil kids come out of the bathroom without washing their hands with soap and water - even if they just pee! And common sense, if you get POOP on your face - I would HOPE you'd wash your face with SOAP and water - not just water. In all the instances that were given - laundry, car, body, etc - water is not the most important ingredient. If you wash your clothes, car, or body with just water - you haven't done anything. Wash your nasty clothes with just water next time and see how clean they get and how fresh they smell. Wash your car with just water and see how clean it gets. Wash your body with just water - and see how clean it gets and how clean you smell. The key is - you need SOAP to kill the germs and achieve true cleanliness. Water alone doesn't cut it. That's why we buy detergent for our clothes, cleaning products for our car, and soaps for our bodies. NOT JUST WATER. Water just rinses away the residual fecal matter so you don't have skid marks. And there's nothing wrong with that - but to use your hands to wipe it away??? I still say - I don't care if you squat or sit, wanna rinse or wipe - just USE WIPES and not bare hands - this is something India should adopt. Like yesterday. USE WIPES, NOT HANDS. Then we take a BABY WIPE (moist towelette) and wipe away the remaining trace amounts of poop. And then we dry the baby off and put on a new diaper - and then we repeat the process as needed. There's NO NEED to stick your fingers in the baby's anus or wipe around the baby's genitals with your bare hands! That's prolly why a lot of pervs exist. Spending a lil too much time trying to give the defenseless/non communicative little baby that ULTRA hand-cleaned feeling - nasty.

The sad thing is - I have a lot of Indian friends and this disturbs me no emd to read something like this. I'm guessing - you have to use bottled water for cooking and drinking because the native water supply is supposed to be unclean. These are called Turkish toilets and not Indian. They are used in All Arab Countries as well. Most Arab countries would have a choice of toilets styles. Squatting and washing is the best way to release your ........ It is very hygienic as well.

I've been in Japan for two years and encounter the squat toilet frequently. Still haven't perfected the method, but the squat position is comfortable. Fortunately paper is the standard here. I was forced to use the water in Malaysia, a bit tricky to figure out w/o helpful instructions like these.

i am reconsidering my trip to india after learning about the bathroom issue. No wonder India is full of diseases....I am reading about bathroom dilema....and it can be solved by bringing bacterial soup ,paper etc....but......you cannot solve the issue of having to eat what Indians cook unless of course you bring witho you cans of tuna fish........ I've been to India 3 times now and didn't know to use the toilet like this. Informative, if I return one day. As a female I found it difficult to keep my clothing out of the way. As for all the comments posted herein, using water to clean is far more hygienic and satisfying than using TP. TP could always be used after that. As for the comments containing pro-india and anti-india I must say that the main (say from 1 to 10) problem that India faces is that of overpopulation. Corruption runs through the rank and file of all sort of administrative systems in India. What was required is a revolution which will never come. Side by side if you consider the practice of showing respect and looking after the elderly, India will continue to win over the West.

The poeple you find defecating on the roads in india do so because they are poor and have no sanitation facilities....they have no choice but to do so... Not every indians poops on the street, on the extreme poor poeple do so. Take off your pants, and hang it on a hook, usually found on the back of the door. 2. squat and do your thing. 3. fill a mug with water, and using it, clean your behind with your hand.(left hand if your right-handed, and vice versa). Most indians toilets also have a flush, so press it when your done with the clean hand. 4. (Most important step) Get up, and goto the sink. Wash your hands with soap. Usually the soap id 'dettol' or stuff, which is basically meant for this purpose. its pretty effective in removing germs and bacteria. Once you wash your hands with that soap, your hands are quite clean and free from germs and bacteria. strange analogy, but this is basically what surgoens do when they go in for suregey as well. before and after a surgery, they always wash their hands with some kind of anti-bacterial soap. If indians were so dirty, they would be a truckload of more diseases and epidemics spreading than what it is right now. Also, this is the way many other nations take care of their poop business as well. If there is one advice i can give a foreigner coming here apart from always drinking bottled mineral water, it would be to carry along with you some anti-bacterial liquid soap with you. thats it.

It is also quite difficult to work with many Indians, Caste, Religon and sub-ethnicity do get in the way much more than in the west. Read through all the posts Phew!!. Let me add my two bits. This type of toilet is(was)common in most non-western countries including Korea and Japan. I don't know of any Indian who does not use soap after using the loo at least after #2 but many public places do not have soaps as some people steal them or the people who own(govt or private)these places do not want care to go through the expense of providing the soap. Most people I know would usually not use a public toilet for #2 except in extreme emergency. While for Indians it is quite easy to use this for those who are uninitiated it can be a physical challenge. Yes you can(as most do)use the toilet without fully removing your pants. Now I wouldnt advise this to those are new to it though. Traditional Indian clothes allow quite a bit of flexibility as compared to western clothes so squatting is much more easier. Those who are substantially overweight will find it impossible to use these toilets. Also many Indian homes do have a cistern with the Squat style toilets. Use of water after pooping is much more hygenic than just paper. I always carry a bottle of water to the toilet when I am in USA. Use the paper first or a moistened paper and subsequently water. Then make sure to wash hands with soap. That is the drill of most Indians. So next time you see an Indian in USA carrying a bottle of water into the loo and coming out with an empty one you know what happened. Public toilets except those in malls and airports are quite horrible in USA. On top of this one is expected to sit on that seat....!!!! Of course europeans have discovered the pleasure of cleaning with water and the Japanese have found a solution to the water and hand problem. Look for the TOTO brand (and others)on google and look for a bidet seat. Starting from $1000 this seat is amazing it warms up if it is cold. has a hidden nozzle which comes up at the touch of a button on the remote attached near the toilet. You can control the intensity of spray, pattern of spray, temperature of spray and the angle at which the nozzle aims Wow!!. After all this it also air dries you!!! I am planning to have them installed in my new home. This fits on to a regular toilet. On the Indian side I feel more hygenic in the sense that I do not have to touch the seat with any part of my body. I always try to avoid shaking hands in US post lunch time. Hotel workers are required by law to wash their hand before returning to work which means that office workers are not. And please those who commented about hygiene and touching your anus please this is from a culture which thinks nothing about kissing a dog who puts its mouth in its ass 100 times a day!! Dont shoot anything till you have tried it. Next time when you go to the loo carry a bottle of water with you, after using the paper put a little water or moisten a wad of paper and wipe your anus a couple of times, dry with paper. Try it you will not go back to TP alone again.

Well, the important thing is that one doesn't use his/her butthole as a paintbrush, smearing poop everywhere. However, some Indian nationals are not very pleasant - they are difficult to work with - largely due to their caste problems,.. I work in an international MNC and some of the behaviour I have observed is appaling. Northern Indians keep stressing that Southerners are almost regarded as a lesser species. One Indian National lady disregards you until she learns who you are. Perhaps, there are problems in many work places around the world. But I honestly do find Indians the hardest of people to work with. They are, mostly (not all), arrogant, tolerating of poeple they feel can pave the way to their success. Most are hypocrites who say nice things infront of you and do otherwise. From a professional point of view, most Indian Nationals will steal your work and take credit for something that is not theirs. Asia is a large place, and as much as Indians will be around there are other races out there who are just as capable - just as cultured and above all, far more respectful, honest and transparent than their Indian National counterpart will ever be. This is not "say bad". This is simply an observation.

If you go to any public place and you see one of these toilets you will find people have shat all over the place -yup !you'll find shit sprayed like ketchup -its that grose -but do you think Educated civilised Indians will do that? Many of these are uneducated folks - they lack basic civic sense - There are People spit on the road - but its not all Indians -its some. I can see the "hygenic" views from both sides. Cool with it even, it would make more sense to me however if there were soap involved. My hand never makes actual contact, T.P. you wipe till theres nothing left to wipe off, in the shower it's a wash cloth or a loupha with soap. I don't see how just water will clean or sanitize anything. Soap and water, yes. They wash there hands with soap and water after, but the devils onion is still as dirty as your hands were before you washed them. So argue all you want, maybe the best is a combo of them both. If you don't feel clean, chances are your not. Being raised with a particular type of training and knowledge might lead each to there own better capabilities in there environment. Hence maybe there both just as clean, but when you switch off you arent as good as cleaning it that way. Oh, and I never sit, toilets are nasty, there toilets, I always hover. For anyone having to venture into unkown good luck!

personally, I like the 'modern' turkish toilet which, like a western toilet, you can sit down on, but it also has a water pipe. so instead of jumping on a bidet after, you can turn on a water tap and wash. my preferred method: 1- do your business 2- wipe excess off with paper 3- wash with water until clean 4- dry with paper so good, i've even customised my home toilet. enjoy the best of both worlds!

Don't be confused....its the most hygienic way and easy. for hands in India there are separate sinks with tap and soap .See if you use western style shitter(especially public toilets) ...everyone sitting on the same and giving germs to each other but in this case no travelling of germs and water rinsing the seat and the ass.Also the rush on the side shown is for cleaning the toilet. In Inida they do have lysol tupe things don't worry. For all with back ache or other problems don't worry just chk in a good restaurant or hotel u will find western style also. I've seen far worse than the one pictured on this site. Furthermore, having traveled in the rural areas, I have seen more than one occasion when I wished the person had used ANY toilet instead of the street. There is another way to do it , MY Way : At home Western style- Use paper on seat,raise your legs by sliding two small stools under them causing your knees to be in a position as if you were sitting in an Indian style..After you finish you use paper ,when you think it is almost clean, go over to the sink let the water run , slide backward on the sink ,balance yourself and with one of your hands between your legs,and one balancing you body, push the water into the crack of your butt,splash for several times till you feel it is clean ,Now wipe yourself dry and clean with a paper towel or regular paper ,If the paper is still filthy ,repeat with water by sitting again on the sink.Wash your hands with soap and make sure the sink is clean before you leave.Return stools to corner. ***** As "Howard Stern "warned us ,do not use more then 3-4 paper wipes after you finish. You may cause yourself some bleedings. ( That is all I can remember from him after 10 years of listening to him, before he became a Jew ,sorry a lefty Liberal.) Hope it helps.

In U.S. I take in a wet paper towel, put it on a dry one, put both on a trustworthy flat surface inside stall. Wipe seat. Do biz. If necessary do preliminary wipe with dry TP, then use wet paper towel, maybe just half of it, then other half, then if necessary the dryk one, which is now damp . . . finally dry off with dry paper. Carefully redo clothes. Wash, wash, wash hands, mitt soap. Then reflect on the disgusting MFs who skip many of the above steps. Makes you want to avoid shaking hands with anyone, let alone anything else. As a confirmed muff diver I now have paranoid thoughts. Perhaps a bath first is in order . . . btw, no toilet seats in Latin America.

I heard some ask how to use western toilets: 1) only shit in the morning, 2) take a shower everyday --if there is a hand shower--clean your asshole, 3) if you have to shit during the day- wipe only the asshole thoroughly (females)--mabybe several times, then wipe water area. 4) always thoroughly wash both hands after toilet. Public toilets--wipe the seat with toilet paper before sitting. Follow 3,4 above. I agree Indian is better in a way but time consuming and not necessarily more hygenic. Once I did have sticky poop and asked my sis to hand me paper 'coz I didn't want to touch poop. 2. Indian toilets are a very good exercise for your thighs. It was very hard for me to sit Indian style again after being in USA for 6 years. My body never used those muscles in 6 yrs which are used in Indian squat toilets and I regret this fact. Infact, I did wish for once to have a squat toilet in the USA. 3. American toilets are very convenient and toilet paper does give protection from touching poop but you cannot prevent the toilet seat from being soiled (esp. when you have diarrhea) and also the fact that someone else's butt touched the toilet seat makes me use toilet seat cover either always or keep my butt up when there is no toilet seat cover:) 4. Last but not the least- Never make love to a person who has not showered and cleaned his/her butt after doing #2 in a western toilet. Enjoy!!

I didn't do any research about the toilet situation before going on a very long business trip to Bangalore....instead it left me curious afterwards what the hoses, buckets and drains were for....and now I'm glad I didn't! For you Westerners that are going to visit India (Bangalore actually) on business...every toilet I used was westernized (same toilets as ours and toilet paper as well) with added features such as the hoses and buckets. I only ran into this situation once where there was a hole and the floor was soaked...at a public temple restroom...and I chose to not use it and hold it until our next stop. PS: It now makes sense to me why Indians take their shoes off before entering their homes. :)

First of all the problem of other people's skin touching the toilet seat... use toilet seat covers. They are available at most public restrooms. Secondly, using water for anal cleansing after defecation is a very hygeinic and natural way of removing fecal stains. Using toilet paper, is a man made way. If you defecate, why do you flush with water? why not just wipe the shit off with some paper in the bowl? the bowl would look puke. Same thing applies when using TP too. TP cannot remove 100% fecal stains. There is always going to be some leftover, regardless of how many wipes you make with TP. Another example would be, if you have a car that is full of mud. You wipe the mud with a towel, or you shower the car with water -- which is more effective? I have used both water and TP for anal cleansing, and i must admit it feels fresher and better to use water. After using water, hands are washed thoroughly in soap and there is no germ or infection whatsoever. Even the medical community acknowledges that using water for anal cleansing is a valid way too. The regular western toilet, is better than the indian style toilet. But water definitely is better than TP too. You take bath with water too, the washer uses water to wash clothes, and you brush your teeth with water too as well as the carwash machine uses water too. So using water for anal cleansing is not at all nasty or sick. Water throughout history has been a basic ingredient for cleansing.

Well toilet paper is not normally provided you have to pay 30 cents for it at the toilet entrance. I've been to Thailand and their public toilets is also very much like us with water. I prefer Indian toilet. I've studied in US 10 years ago I am not comfortable with toilet paper only when I go the American toilets. If I have to go to American toilets I will soak the toilet paper with flush water first before I wipe them on my bh. It feels better this way. Its funny how you westerners can feel comfortable without washing the bh.

I just came back to the US from India a couple weeks back. My cousins there have Western-type toilets in their homes now, but I was fascinating by the way they have hybridized the Western and Indian styles. Still no toilet paper. They have this plastic bidet type thing that shoots water horizontally from the back part of the toilet seat. I had a hard time arranging my ass so that the stream cleaned me, but I'm sure with a little practice it is effective. They flush by turning a faucet so they only use as much water as is necessary. At first, I did find it confusing figuring out in each bathroom which nob turned on the bidet and which flushed the toilet. I think this hybrid arrangement is the best. Not too much water waste. No waste of paper. Comfort of the Western seat (squatting can get tiring especially if you are sick or have bad knees). And the cleanliness of using water, but without using the hands. Also your clothes aren't likely to get wet.

India is a wonderful experience and the people are very welcoming...so they use squat loos....I loved it so much I built a hotel there and try to give people the experience of living in India rather than visiting it. Look at my website www.kadaltheerambeachresort.co.uk We offer the traditional hosepipe which you can use instead of the loo roll and it is much more hygenic in my opinion. (There is also loo roll for the more unadventurous). We could learn a lot from the eastern culture, family values, respect and liking people for who they are and not what they have in their bank balance. Also their knowledge of nature and medicine from the local plants for all kinds of deseases and ailments is a breath fresh air from the usual antibiotics that are handed out "willy nilly" in the western states. If you use the hosepipe by the loo your hand does not have to come in contact....and if you have to use your hand, it's not the end of the world. Just remember to eat with your right hand!!!

Well, the important thing is that one doesn't use his/her butthole as a paintbrush, smearing poop everywhere. This is really an unpleasent prospect, to find an art show somewhere made of someone's poop. Also, it's pretty important to remember not to fart too much while you're shaking out a poop. It's not that you don't have the right, it's just that it isn't curteous to all of the people watching you. Incidentally, if all of the people watching you and enjoying the show are making you nervous, sometimes it helps to just sit down altogether, as your genetalia and most of your butt will be obscured by the hole. It's usually less messy to make sure that the person who put on the show before you dumped a pail of water down the hole, though, because otherwise you'll get poop smeared all over your butt. As we say in Hawaii, "Have a crappy pooping session, use your butthole to your advantage--shake out a turd!"

If I am at home after using the dry toilet paper , I again use wet wipe ( with water ) to clean my ass hole again then dry wipe it. When I was travelling through India, I was informed more than once that the key to keeping things sanitary is that a person cleans his/her butt hole only with the left hand and eats only with the right hand (given that, in a society scorning both toilet paper and silverware, nothing comes between one's fingers and the subject matter of either activity). Indeed I saw a great many people follow this rule so fastidiously when eating that they would conspicuously hold their left hand behind their back. Very simple! Very clean! Who needs soap or warm water in the toilet since everyone copiously follows the left hand/right hand rule? This gave me enormous comfort, that is until I got on my first bus and saw half the passengers hanging onto the overhead rail with their right hand and the other half hanging on with their left (and just as frequently interchanging hands)! As wonderful of a country as India is, there is really no way to whitewash the fact that toilet ettiquette there is just not very sanitary (and probably accounts for why such a large number of the Westerners who visit there for more than a couple of days invariably get sick ). Not that America is has the perfect solution to toilet ettiquette! As any Frenchman will tell you, not having a bidet in the American bathroom is not only highly unsanitary but also barbaric. Vive la difference!

both indian and western toilets have their advantages as well as disadvantages. any attempt to prove that either is better than the other is bound to fail. i guess indian toilets are seen not only in india. i know many non indians use it. i don't know why it is called 'indian' toilet though. perhaps it is the indians who invented it or started using it? a word to those westerners who find the indian style shocking and even go to the extend of cancelling a trip to india. nowadays i guess you would rarely find a hotel in india which doesn't have the western style toilet. those that don't have it will be in very remote areas far away from places of tourist import and thus have meagre chances for a western visitor to go to. india is a country that has a thriving tourism industry. and the number of western tourists visiting india every year is pretty large. and almost all hotels that have come up in the recent times are designed keeping the wetern visitor in mind and respecting their needs. mostly, a tourist stays in a hotel that is in the vicinity of some tourist spot, and the hoteliers are well aware as to what kind of guests they cater to. and almost all hotels in a place of tourist importance will definitely have toilet papers and western closets in them. a word to those who have hairy bottoms. don't worry, the amount of water you use to wash is more than enough to take care of it. no poop will be sticking to your hair after you wash properly. i guess even the toilet paper would be harder for hairy people compared to non hairy ones :) and a word to those who think water will be splashed all around. no. the doubt is just because you are not used to it. when you are used to it, you can hardly find a drop of water outside the toilet bowl. that said, i guess this discussion is very overexaggerating about both western as well as eastern aspects, which will only present a wrong picture of things.

Wouldn't the water kind of go everywhere too? (I mean this about the general feeling that this is a more sanitary way to go than the Western toilet.) I certainly get it, and agree, that killing the last of our trees for toilet paper or using up increasingly rare drinking-quality water to flush toilets are not good things. I agree even more that taxing India's systems to meet Western expectation is very wrong. (So while I'm there I plan to do what everyone else does to the best of my ability...and that is why I am at this site... I am trying to use humor in my posts because this is an uncomfortable topic, not to be offensive, but my questions are real.) It seems though, that with toilet paper, there is a barrier between the hand and the poop. For most of us, most of the time, there is no contact whatsoever between hand and poop...and we wash with soap and water after anyway. The biggest sanitary risk of a Western toilet is between the toilet seat and the person, and most of that is fiction. Though poop is a very bad thing when it comes to disease transmission, there is seldom any of it on the toilet seat and not many of the bad things in poop transimit from butt to butt [you have to get the fecal matter somewhere like in your food to get sick... which seems far more likely with a poop-laden water-rinsed hand then with a toilet seat] and urine is sterile (people in life-boats drink their own to survive, etc.) in all but the sickest of people. Water too is not a particularly controllable element. It seems to me that if I use a mug or a hose to try to splash it up against my butthole, that, first, the water is going to go everywhere (on the floor behind the crouch-toilet, maybe a little on the wall behind it, on the the bottom half of that trashcan, etc.) As opposed to all of the poop, paper, and water all flushing right down the contained toilet. So...doesn't the prospect of poopy water splashed all over an area seem less sanitary, squating above it or not, then wiping a toilet seat with toilet paper and then sitting on it?

A couple of questions even... So...I'm squatting there, I've somehow sloshed water from a mug up against my butthole from underneath...I've wiped it with my hands...according to many forums this does not form the 'poop-mud' in my butt-crack that I might otherwise expect...but is in fact sanitary. .....What does one do with one's now wet butthole? (And presumably splashed-wet other parts of the undercarriage; "taint", lower-cheeks, nutt-backs, etc..?) Last time I checked (which isn't that often) things were getting pretty hairy back there. It just seems to me that I'm going to end up with a poop-mud laden butthair-sponge and a filthy hand. But what's worse is I'm going to have a wet-poop-streak down the back of my trousers from my soaked nether-regions drying themselves off on my pants. Is that wrong?

I appreciate this website and the pictures and description. Since we are on the topic of unmentionable stuff, I am still left with a question... Now and then in life I may have had occassion to scratch my butthole. I'm not in the habit of it or anything but if it itches and nobody's around... Also from time to time I may miss-grip the toilet paper or break through it... In either case, having noticed a small quantity of poop on my finger, it seems nearly impossible to wash it off properly even with ordinary hot-water and soap. That is not to say that there is any visible residue, but even an hour later it seems like my fingers do not pass the smell-test...by which I mean, if you get poop on your fingers, your fingers kind of still smell like poop even after you have washed them thoroughly. So...is this the case with a squat toilet? I don't even see a giant jug of liquid hand-soap in this picture. Can someone please elaborate? (I am not trying to be offensive, I really want to understand as I am planning a trip to India this winter.)

Hello All, I would like to take the liberty in explaining you ppl, how best one could use the indian toilets when used to the western styles. Pulling your trousers and inners back is common in both western and indian styles. You might think that the trousers would fall to the floor. But it wont, the way it has to be done is, 1) A typical indian toilet is just a flattened version of a western toilet for comparison sake. So your bum has to be near the hole with water and you should face the other end of it (as shown in pics above) 2) Loosen your trousers the same way you would do it for a western toilet. Use your hands to hold them in either sides so that when you take the frog hopping posture they wont touch the floor. More importantly try to roll up the bottom of your trousers until 2/3 folds so that the they wont get wet. 3) Once you are done with the job, look for a mug and a bucket nearby. These days you could find the water hose pipes too. Just like you wipe with the paper in the WC, you got to take your left hand (can also use the right one if you are feel so) very near to the asshole. Then use the other hand to fetch a mug of water / hose pipes just above the left hand. Now slowly pour water on to your asshole, while the left hand does a to and fro motion to rub the thing out. The water you pour for the first time may not be enough, so maintain your left hand at the same place and grab how many ever mugs of water you would need to clean your left hand and the asshole. Dont pour the water with force and the scat can scatter on to your feet. This is not complicated at all if you use your natural instincts. 3) Now bring your hands to the front and rise up from the toilet, buckle on your pants and step way from the toilet. Use the bucket full of water to splash the scat on to the hole. Make sure your job is to first push the scat into the toilet's hole. Then use more buckets of water pour it onto the hole so that the scats are washed away into the hole and nothing is visible to you. 4) Now go wash your hands and have a happy feeling with a light stomach. This is my third time in India. I love this country and her people. I so far got sick only once and it was mild - no hospital. The fact of life is, if you are westener, you have to be supercareful with what you eat (cooked food that had no chance of contamination, or prepackaged meal, selected fresh fruits etc.) If you are a westener your body will be less resistant to the local bacteria, so whatever style you adopt, be aware of the other styles too, and make sure to carry some hand cleaning gel to use before you touch anything you might eat.

While many of you have rightly pointed out the hygiene part (no dirty toilet seats, water etc), Indian style toilets have some other advantages. 1. Indian style is good for older people who DONT have gout or knee problems but suffer from constipation etc. Because of the way you sit, you have less chance of getting a hernia while straining..... Seriously. 2. You use much less water to "flush" when the toilet does not have a cistern than you would using a western style toilet. Also, if the cistern is not working, it is easier to flush an Indian system using a bucket of water than it is to LIFT the bucket for a western style toilet. From an owner's point of view, it is easier to access a blocked pipe in western style than in an Indian style. A word of caution: it is always advisable to sit down with a mug/ container of water rather than trusting the tap to deliver AFTER you have downloaded.)

I've been to all manner of different public toilets from motorway service stations and train stations to pubs and nightclubsin US and UK. You can be pretty certain that half of them will have a cubicle containing a yellow stained dripping bum seat at some point. Absolutely disgusting. Atleast squatting toilets of India are far better than the western considering you don't have o stick your bum on the grease... although they might be even disgusting than in the west. Being a U.K born indian, i have been brought up using water/hand to wash the behind, using just toilet paper has always left me feeling unclean. Having to use the toilet outside the home environment always means keeping some form of water bottle to use when out. My experience of using toilets in India have been varied. Even though they are designed to use water, they can be uncomfortable when required to squat. I also feel that I have to strip from the waste down in order to go to avoid having any accidents. My main critisism would be that I found many that were not clean and the way not door peg to hang your trousers on if required. I am not sure if other people manage to go with their trousers still dangling around their ankles???

yea baby...i have been living in the bloody US...for over 2 years...and still prefer the Desi Style of squatting...i take my LOTA with me where i go as opposed to carrying toilet paper everywhere...

Something is missing guys. Not just throw the water in full force but we use our left hand to clean the butt. And then clean the hands with soap. After washing, drying can be done with toilet paper.

Dear All, Indian toilet has been in existence for a longer time than the existence of the Western world. So it is a tried and tested method. What is wrong with this? When you sit in the squatting position, you can poop with no pain or pressure but pure pleasure. You bottoms don't touch the seat and neither does any part of you but your feet where you can wear sandals. It is hygeinic and works the best with the Indian economy and culture. If you want to use Western Toilets then please stay west and avoid US! We really do not miss you when you do not appreciate our culture. dude the indian toilet seems like a great idea. zero contact means zero germs from toilet seats that were sat on or pissed on by the guy before. u just let your poop fall off and then you can wipe (western) or wash (indian) or wetwipe (indian in west). now if only the french bidet can be adapted, we'd have a winner! toilet paper is disgusting. Seriously it is a dry wipe, it leaves poop on you no matter how hard you wipe. It is utterly disgusting. Not only that toilet paper causes fissures (bleeding) and the fissures get infected by the poop. Poop left behind leads to itchy bums and smelly fingers. In North America it'd be nice if wet wipes were available or water, it would definately improve the anal health of americans.

To the True Indian The photos aren't bad thing shows other people how to use the indian toilets. It will be a very very very long time before India rules. There is so much corruption from the government down to the people. Just been to india myself, am an indian myself and was appalled at the mentality of the people in some parts of india. The men just stand and piss and shit anywhere they want, the rubbish is littered in the streets the animals, dogs and especially the cows that indians are supposed to worship wonder around as strays, looking for food in the rubbish, some lame some weak, is that how people in india take care of their animals and people. Food sold of trolleys, polluted with flies, petrol fumes and what ever on earth can polute the food, out in the hot sun. No wonder I became voiolently ill and hospitalised. Hospital has no hygeine either, dirty wards, beds and especially toilets. Nurses from hell!!!

To True Indian, Nobody said this was an ugly thing, but at least you recognize you guys should start using regular toilets. And yes, every country has bad things, but this is not bad, this is just funny, and it's interesting to see that the rumor that you guys don't use toilet paper is real. For some ugly pictures of the US, just go to a hick town, take pics of people in trailer parks, or just watch the Bum Fighter movie. There's a lot of poverty, drugs, trash, and bad things in the US but it all depends from where you see things. For one thing, I guess the whole toilet situation for me would be a little to much to deal with, I guess I'd take my toilet paper in my back pack, fuck that, I'll take a shit in the wild and wipe my butt.
