Lunchtime - The Essex Cafe

Liberty Street

There are many small businesses that operate on the perimeter of the World Trade Center construction site. The Essex, like many others, served as a first aid station during the horrific events of September 11, 2001. You'll find many of those establishments hang this Flag of Honor along with photos of first responders who sacrificed everything to save lives. The construction worker in the background, takes his lunch break from work on the rebuilding project.

This is an amazing picture Jenene! My daughter and I had lunch there when we traveled to NYC in 2008 with her 8th grade class. This cafe was so incredible to visit and try to imagine what it was like there on that day.

I love how the colors and lines of the flag are echoed in his vest. Richly expressive interpretation, Jenene.

I guess that the place will carry that history forever now!

The lone diner makes the image, and the sad memories it evokes, even more poignant, Jenene.

Love the way you framed this...we are all small compared to the power the flag represents!

A very emotional image, Jenene. I would think that anyone who ate at the Exeter would be focused on the events of that day. The diner in the image tells us that we must carry on.

an image with plenty of meaning.

Powerful image.....yes, we should still thanking those that gave their lives and everything to save others!
