The Bronx Zoo is located in New York City and is the largest metropolitan zoo in the United States. The zoo is situated on 265 acres in a natural parkland setting adjacent to the New York Botanical Garden. The Bronx River, the only significant fresh water stream in New York City, flows through both parks. In 2006, the zoo housed more than 4,000 animals, many of which are classified as endangered or threatened species. Nearly two million persons visit the Bronx Zoo each year. This gallery is a small sampling of the zoo’s many animals.
