bought this at a fleamarket for $20. Looks to be some form of a 1903 Springfield Rifle gunstock. Dale Conrad (see comments) identified it as a M1903A3 Springfield scant stock, ca. early '40s. I believe this was made by Remington.
I found a few schematics online of the receiver and parts that need to be located. I still need a rear sight and blade for the front sight.
I bought a former drill rifle for cheap money to get the parts for mine. It had a plastic stock and some of the pieces I don't need I can part out and recoup.
I've started taking steps to reactivate it though I may not go as far as replacing the barrel and turning it into a shooter. I want to at least get all the visible parts working, like the cut off. Grinding out the weld for that required damaging the cut off so I'll get a new one. The cut off spindle had issues coming out and will also require a new one. The striker (firing pin) is broken off and the firing pin hole in the bolt welded closed. The weld will have to be milled/ground off and the 0.08 inch hole redrilled dead center.
I bought an action wrench and removed the old barrel. I also bought a good barrel vise with plans to install the new barrel however anticipating need more tools and technology to finish ream it I found it more cost effective to send it of to Chuck at Warpath Vintage in Denver to install, ream and test fire the barrel and receiver. He recommended not using a reactivated bolt so I sent along an NOS I had bought.
He had it finished the day he received it. He said it needed to be faced, essentially to be turned in a lathe, high spot removed as well as match face the barrel shoulder to the action.
Then he did a test fire, and checked the case for signs of pressure.
He shipped it back and I reassembled it. Project done.
