Valujet Flight 592 Airplane Crash Memorial

ValuJet Flight 592 was a flight that crashed on May 11, 1996 en route from Miami International Airport when a fire caused by an oxygen container in the cargo compartment broke out. This is the Memorial Monument in the Florida Everglades on Tamiami Trail, about 11 miles west of Khrome Avenue. The memorial consists of 110 concrete pillars, one for each person that was killed in this accident. The memorial is configured in the shape of a triangle, with a center path that points to the crash site about 8 miles to the north.

I am so sad today thinking about Jennifer Barreiro. She was such a vibrant beautiful girl with her entire future ahead of her. My thoughts and love go out to Marsha, Manny and Mary today. My daughters and I loved Jennifer so much and have so many memories of her. Heaven definitely received a special angel twenty years ago today.

Since discovering the crash site by accident about 15 years ago I normally stop in once a month to make sure things are tidy for the families. Just returned from a trip out this afternoon.

We happened upon the Memorial just last week only because the brown parking sign was visible from the road. Imagine our surprise when we stomped through the overgrown weeds to come upon this magnificent landmark dedicated to so many innocent lives! This is a disgrace to allow this to happen to this sacred site! Whoever is responsible for upkeep needs to be held accountable.

I spent the last hours of Jennifer Barreiro's life with her. She was visiting a mutual friend in Miami, her freshman roommate Julie who was a good friend of mine in high school. We were all 20 years old. I was designated driver that night and took Jen all over South Beach in my old 1995 Honda Civic. She marveled at South Beach, excited, picking up free postcards at stores and different places we went to to give her boyfriend and family at the time. It was much like an ordinary night, I got to know her, found out her interest in continuing study in education and special needs. We both had a mutual love for frogs, at which point she showed me her tattoo of Kermit. I found her lovely and special. I remember dropping them all off at 3am (we were sober) and through the drivers window, told Jen it was nice to meet her and to have a safe flight. I asked her who she was flying with and she responded "Valujet". This struck me just with the unfamiliarity of the name of the airline. She also concluded she was flying at 12 pm or so and I wished her well and went home. The next day I, (lazy 19 year old) went to get my mother a gift for mother's day. The close proximity to mother's day, looking back, is just further insult to injury. I came in from shopping for my mother and after putting the orchid in the patio, came into the family room where my mother was watching the news. I saw the crash and not thinking, moved to leave the room when my mother said "honey, you should watch this." I replied "Well, you know, I don't really feel like watching anything depressing today." She responded, "I know how you are but this actually happened right here in Miami." I, reluctantly, sat down. Not long into sitting with my mother did I hear the reporter mention "Valujet", in which the name immediately struck a chord. They repeated it a second and third time before I looked to my mom and said "It can't be." My mom looked at me wide-eyed and questioning and my heart started racing. I got on the phone and immediately called Julie's private line. It rang and I repeated calling until a mutual friend and best friend of mine answered the phone, Laura. She had been with us the previous night and she clearly had been crying. I knew then that Jen was on the plane. I didn't know Jen well but the sheer magnitude of what had happened coupled with being with her just less than 24 hours previous hit me like a wave of steel. I started crying and my mom's jaw dropped and she started crying. It was emotional because it's hard for anyone to imagine anything on that level happening, much less when you are 20 and to another 20 year old. I remember just laying down, being appreciative of my life and devestated for Jen's life all at one time.

I was in the same sorority as Jennifer. I knew her sister and mother. What a sad story, she had gone to Miami so her friend would not have to drive alone from Bloomington. She was flying back home. I wish all the families comfort...even so many years later.

I remember Jennifer Barreiro very well. I was on student council with her at Bloomington North and I also ran track with her. She was a very wonderful person and had a heart of gold. May God bless all of her family and god bless all those who perished on Valujet. Chris Philippsen

Although I happened to drive by last year, it was too dark to stop on my way back by. This year a friend & I made the trip back specifically to be witnesses to the memories. Any reason this is not better marked so more people could know what it is when they drive by?

I JUST SEEN THE DOCUMENTRY OF FLIGHT 592 EVEN THO IT WAS A WHILE BACK BUT IT STILL TOUCH YOU.AND THOSE POOR CHILDREN IT REALLY MAKE YOU THINK OF YOUR OWN.... I GIVE MY DEEPEST EST SYMPOTHY FOR THE FAMILY.
