Seattle is a maritime center because it is nestled on Puget Sound, an inland sea. Seattle and surrounding communities were first settled by those who had traveled from afar by boat. The Center for Wooden Boats is locatd at the south end of Lake Union which is connected by canal from Puget Sound, and is a mid-point as the canal continues eastward to Lake Washington.
