Intramuros, built by the Spanish in the 1500s on the Pasig River, is the oldest district of the city of Manila. Within it are Fort Santiago, the site of Philippine national hero Jose Rizal's final imprisonment and execution by the Spanish in 1896, the Manila Cathedral, and the San Agustin Church, built in the late 1500s.
