Offshore from Lanikai, Oahu, the Moku Lua islands anchor the outer reef, which extends across Waimanalo Bay. The turquoise color of the water inside the reef is caused by white carbonate sediment suspended in clear blue water by wave action. Rip currents flow through channel breaks in the reef, and are visible as saw-tooth patterns of light and dark blue water.
