Prague’s Old Town is the oldest part of a very old city. Excavations of cellars going down several levels below the ground indicate the area has been permanently inhabited since at least the turn of the first millennium, and probably well before then. The centre of the Old Town, appropriately named Old Town Square, has served as Prague’s main marketplace for over 1000 years. The square is home to most of the major sights, including the city’s famous Astronomical Clock. Narrow, cobblestoned lanes radiate from the square in all directions following a plan that defies any shred of modern logic. There are no straight lines here; indeed the streets look as if they were carved by nature rather than the work of man. The best approach is to choose a direction, wander at will and lose yourself amid a largely undisturbed 14th-century townscape.
