Volcą de Santa Margarida (La Garrotxa)

Santa Margarida Volcano crater with the hermitage of Santa Maria de Sacot
The most remarkable thing from the Santa Margarida Volcano is the little Romanesque hermitage constructed in the center of the crater. As it is a church inside a volcanic crater, something not so usual, it has been always an special place for pilgrimage and gatherings of all kind. The volcano is the result of a mix of strombolian and phreatomagmatic eruptions, a little bit older than the Croscat eruption, 11.000 years. Such a big crater was created when lava flowing up from the upper mantle found a large amount of water, causing a huge explosion. Now, the crater is a green meadow presided by the little church of Santa Maria de Sacot. The volcano is 682 m high and is located next to the Croscat volcano.

Fascinating location for a church. Nice that it's the only building down there. "V"
