Arnedo

view map

Arnedo is 48 kilometres from Logroño. Although the town has ancient origins, it really began to grow at the beginning of the 20th century, thanks to local shoe production. The importance of this sector in the town is reflected at the Shoe Museum, where you can see tools and utensils used in traditional shoemaking. Nevertheless, the town's long history has also left interesting artistic heritage. Among the most outstanding buildings are: the medieval castle; Archbishop Argaiz's house/palace, built in 1658; the palace of the Baroness of Benasque, in Modernist style; Vico Monastery, where, legend has it, the Virgin Mary appeared to a Moorish leader in 1045.

I like how the buildings are clustered together despite having a lot of open area surrounding the town...a great history too.

That must have shocked the Moorish leader, to have seen the Virgin. What is interesting is that he didn't see Fatima, which I would have thought more appropriate. Did he instantly convert to Christianity? I always like these historical snippets.
