On the higher point of the main stairway Gaudí decided to put a giantic reptile that acts as the Park´s Guardian, emulating the figure of the dragon that, according to the Greek mythology, defended the fountains of the Temple of Delphi. It´s decorated with pieces of ceramic work, a technique devised by Gaudí and known as "trencadís". However other studies suggest that the dragon is inspired by the crocodile that appears on the french City of Nimes´ Coat of Arms, where Güell studied. The architect is said to have modelled the dragon parting from zoomorph forms that were achieved by his jumping up and down on a wire mesh that would then serve as a mould. The total lengh of the dragon is 2.40 mts.
