Long ago, S-chanf was known as a stop for muleteers; today it is famous as the goal for cross-country skiers taking part in the Engadin Ski Marathon. Families, especially, enjoy a wonderfully peaceful experience of winter here. The intact historic heart of the village radiates an irresistible authentic charm; of the 700 inhabitants, half speak Romansh; and all cherish a local culture that is strongly aware of its Latin roots. The natural landscape on the doorstep is so special it has been protected in grand style: as the Swiss National Park. But while S-chanf, as gateway to the park, has grown in importance for tourism in the Engadin over recent decades, the village has maintained its relaxed sense of tradition.
