Villages with a history one thousand years long, when at the beginning of the XVI century, pirates's incursions started in Liguria. In 1545 they started from Algery and reached Monterosso, doing pillages and pridated the local inhabitants who were mainly farmers; the pirates obliged those farmers to follow them. Genoa didn't have the possibility to defence itself, so it started to build a lot of fortress along the coasts; these fortress are still visible such as the Vernazza's Castle, that is still well kept with the houses that warked as a wall. Moreover, you can still find the the Riomaggiore's Castle, the Monterosso's Tower adn the Manarola's Castle.
