Road between Purmerend and Hoorn

We went from Martha's , who lives at Koog aan de Zaan, near Amsterdam, via Purmerend and Hoorn to the 'Afsluitdijk'which spans some 30 km between North Holland and Frisia

Before we were on the Afsluitdijk, we had to wait for the bridge near Den Oever. The weather was fine, like thw whole day !! Beautiful skies.

Suddenly we were standing be4 an open bridge, which is avery common practice in Friesland, due to the heavy water traffic.

We started our walk near the Nederlands Hervormde Kerk, situated at Eegracht

We parked our car at Galamagracht, near the bridge and opposite the church.

Martha collects some stuff from the car. We were parked in front of the former townhall

Description in Dutch about the history of the townhall. Galamastins was there originally. Galama being a well known Frisian name, stins for stones (building).

Scenic Ee, the heart of a very scenic town

In the 17th century there was standing the socalled Hettingastins (living estate). After that a cow market was held at this place. In 1830 this church was built to replace the Mauritius church which was situated on the Galamagracht where now still is the cemetary

Very picturesque view of windmill De Rat, used (and stil) as wood sawing. It was originally in use in Zaandam (where Martha lives !!). In 1826, due to abundancy (steam power), it was sold to IJlst.

In the thirteenth century IJlst was situated next to the 'Middelzee'and thus had an open connection with the sea.
The name IJLst comes from Y or Ee (name of the river). Y is also the name of the river to Amsterdam from IJsselmeer.
