The Jewish cemetery in Karczew was opened in the 19th century. It is located on a sand dune of an old riverbed of Vistula river.
The last known burial took place here in 1941.
During World War II the cemetery was devastated by the Germans. The matzevot were used for regulating the stream of the Vistula River.
To this day about 200 tombstones have been preserved in the area of 2ha, with the oldest one dating from 1876. Most of them are fallen or broken, many half-burried in sand.
Still an unknown number of matzevot are covered with a layer of sand.


Karczew Jewish Cemetery Restoration Project.
The United States Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad is assisting the Warsaw Jewish Community, the City of Karczew, Poland, and the Polish Jewish Cemetery Restoration Project, a private American organization, in restoring and preserving the Jewish cemetery in Karczew.
In late 2002 the cemetery was surrounded with a new wall and gate.The future restoration plan includes the stabilization of the soil, which is composed of shifting sands.
