JAROSLAW, POLAND

JAROSLAW is a city located on the high edge of the left terrace of the San river. It was listed among the most affluent cities of the Crown at the end of the 14th century. Originally, the town was situated on the neighbouring hill, but during the last quarter of the 14th century it was rechartered with Magdeburg Rights and relocated to the area of the present-day Old Town. At the same time, by virtue of a royal privilege, Jaroslaw became a private city. The great families of the Tarnowscy, Sieniawscy, Zamoyscy, Lubomirscy, Czartoryscy, the famous hetman Jan Karol Chodkiewicz or the future king of Poland, Jan III Sobieski, were only a few of the city owners.
During 16th/18th centuries, the city gained European renown due to its market fairs and became the largest trading centre in central-eastern Europe after Frankfurt am Main. This huge trading activity concentrated mainly in the city centre. The marketplace was the heart of the city.

So thrilled to see the pictures as my mother-in-law, Franceska Lis [deceased]was born in Jaroslow 1 Jan, 1896, Catholic Baptism record from Swiadectwo Chrztu. Her father[ a farmer and school board member] was Antonius Lis and hae mother [from Austro-Hungry] was Mary Duda. Franceska Immigrated to the U S on the Hamburg Line in 1913 to live with her brother John Lis in Dearborn, a suburb of Detroi, Michigan. She married Henry Chudzinski, whose father Mathias was from Samostrzel, parish Sadki northh of Poznan.They had 5 children but 1 died young. Franceska corresponded witha brother Joseph Liss in Jaroslow around WWII and she Remembered tther siblings, Karl, Patrick and Walter Liss. I would love to hear from anyone connected.

My mother, Stefania Ziemba was born on July 12, 1927 in Jaroslaw. She and her family were Catholic. They were all put in Auschwitz and my mother was the only survivor. She came to the United States in 1950. I am trying to find out if there are any other survivors of the Ziemba family.

My father, Harold Borg arrived in the United States in 1921, along with his parents, Ida and Jacob. Three older brothers, Mendel, Aaron, and Louis also came to the states. The survival of the family was a direct result of Aaron's (oldest son) days in Palestine as a Halutz (pioneer). He was severely affected by malaria and was told to leave or perish. He telegraphed his parents in Jaroslaw and said he would meet them anyplace in theworld, except Poland. They emigrated, and the family survived. My grandfather, Piotr Kazimierz Solarz was born in Jaroslaw on June 29, 1891. We think his father was Andrew and Mother was Maryann Kostecky Solarz. My grandparents, Ignatz and Frances Karamol, arrived in New York on the Pretoria and settled in Toledo Ohio. The ship manifest from 1901 shows them coming from Jaroshaw. Does anyone know of a Karamol or Robakowsi family in Jaroslaw?

Hi everyone , My name is Michael Rajczyk , I'm here in San Francisco reading your posts with interest. My father came from the village of Wiazownica, His family came here (we lived in New Jersey) when he was a teen, around the time of the first world war's end. But his mother went back to Poland to be with her parents who were both sick with the Spanish flu. While there (she did not make it in time -they both died from it) her husband died from an accident and she later married someone from her town I believe. When the Germans came she was killed in what is something of a mystery in our family. The story is the Germans bombed the town and she was killed. I have always been interested in the War and Poland's history. My dad has been dead along time now but an Aunt is alive -she is 81 I believe. She remembers two Jewish families in the town Wiazownica. One dfamily had the name Mendol (she remembers the name was not spelled with an "e" at the end of it. They owned a small store that sold 'variety' items. If anyone can tell me what happened to the Jews in that town-I doubt that the SS came in with force for such a small town- but I think a few officers would have eventually came and asked how many Jews lived there. Can anyone tell me what happened there during the war. I especially would like to know about the "bombing" and also the fate of the town's Jews. Hello! In the year of 1975 I got acquaintance with Marta Ga�usza. She was 20 years old then and she has been living in this town, but she studied at Jagiellonian University in Krak�w. In 1975 and 76 I visited Jaros�aw - this beautiful town - two times, and spent very nice days there. Jozef had two sons in South Africa from an earlier marriage, Franek , who has since passed away, Csezlaw the other son still survives.Before the War Jozef farmed in the area now known as Belarus.

My grandfather came to US early 1910ish?? Phila, Pa area suburb. Trunk we have says Jaroslaw Poland on it. His name was James Sidor, we think he changed it from Sedorski, Sidorsky? He had a sister, trying to find out her name. He married Anastasia Papka. Her brother's name was John Papka. The Papka family met her in Phila when she came over on the ship Caledonia. If you have any info, that would be great. We are not sure if Anastasia was from the area but she had a sister. We are asking questions to our aunts and uncles that are now aged 80's.

My first husband's parents were Michael Mazur- born 20 October 1914 at Wiazownica and Katarzyna Szumigraj- born 2 June 1918 at Wiazownica. They were married at Jaroslav in a Catholic Church approx 1937-1938. They came to Australia in 1950. I would like to know if their are any relatives in this district. Hi Alicja, I have been trying to get information on my mother's family. Her name was Rosalia Hanas, born in Jaroslaw in 1889. She came to the U.S. in 1911. Her place of residence was listed as Swiety Josef, but I cannot locate it. She also came with 4 youngsters in her care whose name was Dudsic. As far as I know, she had a brother called Thomas but don't know if she had other brothers or sisters. Her parents were Jan and Catherine. If you could find out more details from the Hanas folks that you know, I would certainly be happy to receive it. I would also like to know what Jaroslaw was like back in 1900 if you know of a good source of information. Thank you for whatever information you can find.

My father was born in Jaroslaw 2/8/1905. His name was Stephen Micheal Dziuba. Parents were John Dziuba and Aniela Kienc Dziuba. He had a brother Frank (Francis)born approximately 1902. Family migrated to the USA in 1906. Spelling of last name was changed in America about 1923 to Juba (same approximate pronunciation). Any information about them would be much appreciated.

Curiosity?? Google map shows Jaroslaw in one location and an additional Jaroslaw a few miles north. My mother (last name Hanas) was born there in 1889 (but don't know which location). I wonder who I could contact to see if there are Hanas there, and also if I could check cemetary records for her parents John and Catherine Hanas..Thanks for your help.

My father Gerry Jaroslaw Trytko was born near there in 1919 & his father Andnej Trytko was a millwright engineer in 1923. My fathers mother's married name was Batiuk/ maiden name was from the family Sereda.(Paranka) Birth records were destroyed or lost. If anyone can tell me some history of the Trytko /Batiuk/ or Sereda families from the late 1800's til 1926 I would be very happy to hear it. Karren in B.C. My grandfather Samuel (Shmuel) was from Jaroslaw. He left when he was 18. I went to the town in 2006. It was lovely, but there were no signs of Jewry. The big synagogue had become an art school, and the small synagogue had broken windows and graffiti. So sad.

My father, Wladyslaw Jan Pelc was born in Jaroslaw in 1920 but has lived in the UK since the early 1950s. His father was Karol Pelc and his mother's name was Maria (Kolasa).
