Artur Grottger (1837-1867) was a Polish painter and graphic designer, one of the most prominent artists of the early 1800s, despite his brief life.
In early 1866 he met Wanda Monné, a beautiful and rich 16-year old girl from Polish family in Lvov and they fell in love and soon got engaged.
They spent all summer in the mannor house of her aunt in Dyniska, where Wanda was a model to Grottger's patriotic painting series "Lithuania".
They used to go for long walks and this pine was one of their most favourite places to rest under and a witness of their first kisses and happiness.
After the summer vacation they never met again, only could exchanged letters. Wanda's mother was against their marriage as Artur was only a poor artist.
So, he decided to go to Paris, sell his paintings, make success and earn money.
In December 1867, Artur Grottger died in France of tuberculosis. Next year Wanda sold all her jewelery and brought his ashes to Lvov cemetery.
Then she married his best friend, such was the last will of Artur. They both cherrished the memory of an artist in their future life together.
This pine is called "Grottger's pine" and reminds history of their romantic, unusual love, unfortunately without happy end.
