On this site once stood a 13th-century Franciscan church of Mary Magdalene (Mária Magdolna).
Under Turkish rule, this was the only church allowed to remain Christian: all others were converted into mosques.
The chancel was badly damaged during the Liberation of Buda from the Turks in 1686; it was also destroyed in World War II and has not been rebuilt except for one reconstructed Gothic window, as a memento.
