CITY OF ZAMOSC

Zamosc is a town in southeastern Poland with over 66,000 inhabitants, situated on the Labunka River, in the Lublin Voivodship.

Zamosc was founded in 1580 by Jan Zamoyski, the Chancellor and Hetman (head of the army of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth), on the trade route linking western and northern Europe with the Black Sea.
Zamoyski was a magnate, a politician and a humanist, and Zamosc was his personal creation. Established on his private domain, the city was designed for the purpose of trade and private residence.
Modelled on Italian trading cities, and built during the Baroque period (between 1582 and 1591) by the architect Bernardo Morando, a native of Padua(Italy), Zamosc remains a perfect example of a Renaissance town of the late 16th century.
It retains its original layout and fortifications (Zamosc Fortress), and a large number of buildings blending Italian and central European architectural traditions.
Zamosc has a multicultural and multinational history. Poles, Armenians, Greeks, Jews and Scots had lived here together peacefully for centuries.

Zamosc Old Town is surrounded by a wall with seven bastions. These modern star-shaped fortifications helped the military defend the city against invaders. All was planned from the very beginning. Morando marked out the outer line (2.5 km long) of the town and ordered to dig the moat (you can see it in the park now).

The dug out soil was used to make the embankments. As a result of all these earthworks Zamosc was surrounded by strong walls - the impressive bailey (brickwork) was 12 m high and 2.5 m thick. Only three gates led to the city - each one with a drawbridge.
This perfect design influenced the Poland history - Zamosc was never conquered by any invading army.

Zamosc is called "The pearl of Renaissance" or "Padua of the North".
In 1992, the Old City quarter of Zamosc has been placed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
