British Blonde - Doncombe Akhenaten (Best Viewed At Original)

Bristol, England

Spent part of today at a sale of Blonde D'Aquitaine cattle.

The breed is French and was first imported to the UK in the 1970's.

Currently, breeders seem embarrassed about the French connection and have re-named the breed

"British Blondes" which could cause confusion!

This bull's name is Doncombe Akhenaten and he is 20 months old - that's Sue Cavilla holding him.

All pedigree British Blondes are of pure French origin, save for a very weak gentic dilution from stock graded up over many generations. Herefords and Highlands have no relevance to the Blonde's role.

There is a slight difference between a British Blonde and a Blonde d'Aquitaine. Brits have made some outline breeding with Herfordshires and Highlanders to give the species a better resitance to colder and rough climates. Many cattlemans all over the world do this to get qualities of foreign breeds combined with climatic accomodation. Americans do the same with blegian blues in the US. The Blonde d'Aquitaine is normaly a cow that has some curly hair on the front of the head only, rest of the fur is flat. Seeing this bulls makes you more think about a Charolais then a Blonde anyway. Most people are impressed when they see that big bulls the first time. I have a hughe collection of pictures of many cattle breeds and I will save just a few of those in my cattle galleries. Thanks for posting those shots.

And you know I love Blondes! He looks like one ... ahem ... healthy specimen. But a beautiful animal nonetheless.
