Frosterley Marble in it's natural state.

Actually a grey limestone with white coral fossils. Polishes up to almost black and white. It was extensively used for decorative columns and fonts in churches, most notably in Durham Cathedral (world heritage site).

The fact that it's sitting in water and the angle you approaced it from give a real sense of this stone. It's wonderfully textured.
