The Atomium was built for Expo’1958 – the Brussels 1958 World fair in Belgium. It is a structure which represents a unit cell of an iron crystal. It has nine spheres made of steel connected by tubes along the twelve edges of the cube. Before the renovation that took place between 2004-2006 the spheres and other parts of the construction were made of aluminium. Some of the spheres (5 of 9) are accessible for public through escalators and stairs that are mounted in the connection tubes. Permanent and temporary exhibitons can be visited. (IMG_2989ed.jpg )
