The former royal capital of Laos and the heart of Lao culture, Luang Prabang has been called the "Jewel of Indochina." In 1995 the entire town was named a World Heritage Site and designated "the best preserved traditional town in Southeast Asia for both its beautiful buildings and the serenity of its natural surroundings."
