Some pictures taken in the mid nineteen fifties during an engineering assignment on U.S.Navy projects in the Subic Bay region of the Philippines.

What wonderful pictures. I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to grow-up in such a place. To this day, there is nothing like it. I can speak for all my family members. It is the PEARL of the ORIENT!!

I found your site by accident while surfing tonight and I cannot tell how what great memories they bring back. We were there in about 1957-1958 as a Navy family. What a great collection of pictures. I have all of the slides my parents took, including the Flagellantes. My Dad wrote a great story about them. Thanks again.

I just found this site, great job with the photos. I was in and out of port and Olongapo between 66 - 68 I left Subic late in late 1968 returning to Pearl before being discharged. I wish I had taken more pics when I was there. I spent most of my time in the bars as did most of the guys. C.J. Smith BM3 USS Chiploa AO 63

1957 to 1962 I lived with missionary parents and my sisters in Manila. Our vacations were always in Baguio. It was always a treat to visit Clark with American servicemen, and several navy ships (carrier Ranger the largest). We mostly traveled around Luzon, once to Iloilo City. This time of year I recall seeing the flagellantes in Pampanga. As a young boy I was impressed at how it showed me how Jesus, as a human sufferer, went through all the events of Good Friday. Photos remind me of my dad's many slides.

The picture you have titled Divers off Grande Island Subic Bay is wrong. The island shown is Capone Island off of San Antonio up the coast from Subic Bay. I was stationed at San Miguel in the early 70's and spend much of my time on the island snorkling.

I lived on San Miguel Naval Communication Station and attended high school on Subic from 1964-66. While it was a bit later than your photos, they are still a good reflection of life there as I remember it.

These pictures bring back many good memories of the Philippines as I remember her. I lived in Cavite in the early 60's when my husband replaced Chief Smith at the Sangley Point Photo Lab. We could see Corrigidor from our backyard before we moved into base housing. My husband was killed when we returned to the States and many of his photographic works were lost so I relived those glorious times through these wonderful photographs. Richard Searle also has wonderful pictures (Thank you, Richard!) I am the widow of Alonzo A. Slaughter, PH1 and the proud Godmother of one of the Hingada children of Cavite.

I was in Subic Bay aboard the USS Monticello LSD35 in 61 and again in 62. Loved the base and Olongapo was my second home. Anyone remember the night club "Paulines"? I knew a woman named Jane Mercado who worked in one of the clubs. It would be nice to know what happened to her. I'm older now and living in California. Great pictures. Thanks.

There's a lot of change now in Baguio..! I'm from Itogon in I spend my University days in Baguio in the middle years of 70's. Before you could still feel the cool breezes and scents of the pine trees but now no more. Its really overcrowded even the air,its now full of smog., no clean air.,shortage of water., over traffic and untidy.., its no longer a summer destination unlike before its on of the best cities of the Philippines.

These pictures are awesome! This is a treasure. I am so glad someone has a collecion of images of the Baguio of old. I was born in Baguio in 1955 and I still remember the old Session Road and,, of course, Baguio's crowning glory, The Pines Hotel. It used to be a walking city. Much has changed since then. But Baguio will remain the palce to go home to for me!

Stationed at Cubi Pt from 1961-1963 so these pics bring back great memories of the PI. Had opportunity to visit some of the places in these pics, love the memories of that time, made good friends, some who are in an email loop today. My nephew married a girl from Olangapo several yrs. ago and as to show how small a world is, I knew her parents when I was there, and she was a little baby.

Great photos. I was there from 1959 to 1961. The first six months or so I was at San Miguel. I rented a room above a sari sari store in San Antonio. One of the photos looks very familiar. It was on the corner on the main drag through town. The night club in the photo behind the green Cadillac with the high school graduation parade looks like the Club Rio. I spent many hours and pesos there. The second half of my tour was at Bago Bantay in Quezon City, another great tour. Sangley Point held my service jacket, medical and pay records and we rode the utility boats from the American Embassy on Dewey Blvd over to Sangley or rode a Soulog around the bay to Caviti for business or shopping at the exchange or commissary.

Stationed there in 1949 to 1951 at MArine BArracks. I a member of the "Subic BAy MArines", a group of MArines who were stationed there from the 40's to the end of marine activities there and we meet yearly to remonisce and remember the wonderful tours of duty we all shared there. Thanks for the memories = some of us still have pictures of some activities we shared there. Living on British Columbia now but Subic iwill always be a part of my legacy.

I first came to Subic Bay in 1961, and made my decision to someday retire here. I presently live in Subic, and probably will be buried here some day. This is home to me. My fmily in the states often ask when I am coming home and I tell them I am home. The pictures are a delight, but very little has changed except the conjestion.

My father was a commander (USN) on the Sangley Point base next to Cavite, 1952-54. We vacationed in Baguio; I was 8, 9, and 10. He took many slides and most are the stereo variety, very beautiful. I attended college in Baguio City in the late 60s. We used to stay in some places and on the streets until the wee hours... Sometimes we sleep at the steps of Mercury Drug store along Session road... peaceful, serene, clean air and you can enjoy and savor the sweet smell of pine trees early in the morning... that was Baguio city then......gone are those times.....

I, was not there during the50's but was rhere in 65-69 and back 1981 1987, I loved thew whole country, had several visit with Ferdinand Marcos, truly was a friend. alway listened to DZBB along with Manay Deguzman at night along with listening to JohnnyMidnight. I was r=the rider and military post clerk onboard the mail truck that went to Manial air port every night. never had any problems. met the NPA severla times on the road but the never gave me any problems. Its really amazing how little has changed in that time. The streets are more crowded with cars these days, and I didnt see a jeepney in any of those shots, but most everything else looks like it could be a set of recent photos.

It is nice once again to be reminded of how beautiful it was then. I have so much memories of Baguio when I was then still in the US service in the late 50's and I must commend on Roy Santos comment. I went back in 2000 and have observed seeing how far different it is now but I am just one silly guy who's looking forward to retire there and I am glad after so many years I still have a few old Filipino friends who writes back. Wondering if anyone can share some photos of Sangley Point around 1950 and 60!

My first time here was Oct '60, a young 17yo kid, onboard the USS Haverfield (DER-393), I loved the Philippines so much, that after 30 years in the Navy, I retired here. Sure a lot more expensive now, than it was then.

I grew up in Olongapo when it was still under the US reservation and remember it fully that we used to sing the Star-Spangled Banner and the Philippine National Anthem in English. Great picture of the river when it was still clear and also the Public Market in Bajac-bajac. Thanks for the memories!

What a wonderful surprise! I lived at Subic as a high school student from 1959 to 1962. All of my color photos taken then were 35 mm slides, and most of them have been degraded by time and humidity. I has assumed that they were essentially lost, but have been scanning them with a New Nikon Scanner and have recovered many of them to an acceptable condition, but few match yours for clarity and brightness. You must have cared well for your photo memories. If you are interested I can send you a few jpegs. Thanks for sharing your memories this way.

VIEWING YOUR PICS MADE ME HOMESICK AND NOSTALGIC.AM A BAGUIO BOY BODY AND SOUL BORN AND GREW UP IN THAT COLD CITY OF PINES INCLUDING MY PARENTS.I'M NOW A PERMANENT RESIDENT IN CANADA SINCE '76 AND AM REALLY MISSING MY HOMETOWN BAGUIO. THANKS A LOT FOR THESE PICS. THESE ARE TREASURES. YES, I STILL REMEMBER ALL THESE PLACES AS I WAS 9 YRS.
