Hi Mr. Glascock,

I was in search of old BBC taxi photos in Baguio City, Philippines in the 1950s and your page came closest. We have a group at Facebook (Baguio Nasa Puso Kita) where photos of old Baguio are being posted. Is is alright to copy your 50s photos of Baguio to be posted there? No purpose of profiting from it.

It is highly appreciated if you can give a go for this. My email address should show. I would also link your gallery URL on the posts.

Best,

Ruben Austria

Dear John, I just came across your excellent gallery. I was searching for detail in the Brittany campaign and came across a reference to Henanbihen. A friend today showed me a couple of flags that he found in his barn there and I beleive them to be those in the Photographs with the girls. They are a handmade Union Jack (British) and a US flag with cardboard stuck on stars.
More importantly though to me he gave me British parachute container beleived to have been dropped to a Jedburgh team (Felix) near to my home in Dinan. He found this in the barn with its harness and fully loaded with Ammo. (Now disposed of). We are keen to find out more detail of the pics. and hope that you can identify those at Henanbihen. Best regards Dave

Hello John:

Thank you for your service and the incredible photographs. My uncle, Lt. Col Robert Francis Bates, was inspector general of the Sixth Armored Division. In doing some research on him, I came across your amazing collection of photos. God bless you.

John,
Your work is magnificent. Of course I enjoyed the Curacao photos having been on that trip, but personally I really fell in love with both sets of Baja photos! What a wonderful site you have - thank you for sharing it!

John,
I am the media specialist/archivist for the Navy Musicians Association currently working on a video of the reunion of the Navy Band stationed at Naval Base Yokosuka 1957-59. With your permission I'd love to use some of your photos of Japan in the 50's. I'll be making DVD's of the reunion that will be of members of the band- no money will change hands. Thanks you so much for providing all the pictures in your collection, especially those of Japan of the past.

I thank you much for the nostalgic adventure. I spend three tours there, Sangley Pt, San Miguel and Clark AFB. Many of the pictures brought back fond memories. I sent this note to my brother and a few friends that have never been out of the USA.
________

Here are some really great PI photos from the 50’s. There are many places that have changed little to this day.

Baguio is a mountain town. The natives there are called Igorots. You will see a man with a shirt and it looks like his but is hanging out but he actually is wearing a colorful loin cloth. It is nice and cool up there. You notice the people are wearing jackets. Betty and I stayed in the PI Baguio Pines Hotel for our honeymoon, there is a picture of it. The word Bagio actually means Typhoon. While we were there we had a real Bagio. The valley filled up with water. I remember there was a barn nearly covered and a cow had managed to save it self by treading water until it could get on the top of it.

The USN ships used to pull into Subic Bay for liberty in Olongapo. You will see a boat with three guys in it, one has a camera. That is the kinda of boat I used to fish out from. My friend Eugene owned several of them just slightly bigger. We have been to sea a couple of hours past the time we last sighted land.

San Antonio is the town neat the Communications Station where Betty and I got married. We actually married in a Baptist downtown San Antonio

Barrio San Miguel is just outside San Antonio and is the fishing village I love so much. This is where Eugene is from. You will see the banca boats lined up on the beach

What is so wonderful about the place when you get out of the big trashy cities is the wonder people and their simple life. They are so very poor but you see so much happiness.

To the Glascock family: Thank you so very much for posting all of your pictures, but particularly for me, the ones from the Rhine Valley in Germany. I recently had a rare opportunity to take a cruise on the Rhine and along the way, took some decent pictures myself. However, as I stood on the top deck that day, I had no information as to what I was looking at or taking pictures of...I just knew they were breathtaking. Thanks to your photos, I was able to put names with many of the castle pictures I took, as well as other information I so greatly appreciate. I am passing along your site to a few of my friends so we can all see what we missed while we were there. Thank you again. Best wishes to you and yours for the future.

Hi John
I'm currently reading The World of Suzie Wong by Richard Mason, and was interested in seeing pictures of Hong Kong in 1957. Your pictures are exactly what I was looking for, thank you for posting them. I'm a regular visitor to HK since 2005 and only know the new HK, which as you know is vastly different to the era captured so well in your photo's.
Thank's again, Cheer's

Thank you for sharing your 'Japan Then' photos with the World Wide Web community. I served in the Army Signal Corps in Japan from 1957 through 1959. I was stationed at Camp Fuchinobe and Zama while I was there and visited a couple of the places you spent time at. I bought my first camera there and shot both Black and White and Color which I am in process of scanning and digitizing. Unfortunately, I didn't do a good job of recording detail regarding my pictures while there, so have been scouring the web for images shot in Japan. I feel very lucky to have found yours

My dad was Jim Jones, in the 6th Armored Division. He is in some of the photos on the website. My wife's great uncle was J.D. Stratton in the 6th Armored Division as well. My son is intersted in your website to find out about his grandpa's service. If you have any information about Jim Jones, or JD Stratton, please email us at jctzj@sbcglobal.net Thank you.

I am a member of the Super 6th armored Division. I was in the 603rd Tank Destroyer Battalion, it was so very nice of you to make your galleries available to the group. The photography is excellent. I look at some of the photos every day. You and your wife have done some extensive travelling, and sharing your photos is a very nice gesture.
Thank you.

Dear John,
the WWII and Japan pictures are very impressive. I´m 40 years old and I learned a lot of these realistic WWII pictures especially from Germany. Also the Japan pictures are great because you show the daily live. Thank you very much for sharing your life experience.
All the best for you and your family. (Tom, Karlsruhe-Germany)

We sailed for Japan on June 18,1953;mother, sister, brother and myself. At ten I was very excited to see this new country of kimono clad women and young men wearing stilted geta. The next three years were full of adventure and Japanese friend making.Your pictures bring it back and remind me of the vegtable vendors, rice farming on hillsides and the generosity of the Japanese people. Our family visited Kyoto about the time your pictures were taken. Thanks for the splendid effort to bring these images to the web.

To Mr.John Glascock,

I'm very impressed by your photographs of Japan and Hong Kong of 50s.
I can feel nostalgic with those photographs even though I wasn't born in 50s yet.
I'll come again here for sure.

Please take care of yourself :D
