I was cleaning up after the last student left and found myself gazing at this sheet where I explained inverse trig functions to somebody. The usual student response is bewilderment. Which is puzzling, but understandable. They have been introduced to the concept of inverse functions several times in previous courses, but when you put trig into it their brains go pop. They had somehow thought all there was to trig was SOH CAH TOA. I have often thought about writing a math book in plain english. But every time I think of that idea, my brain says "NO"!
Agent Listorama will probably come along with a comment about the evil math. I felt that way one time, but I grew out of it. I have come to realize that it is sort of fun in its own right. Recreational trigonometry sure beats recreational drugs, except alcohol, of course.
If this stuff has any relation to The Evil Math, then I shall avert my eyes. Isn't "sin" something bad? Trig was fun. However, these days, the only tan I'm involved with is produced by the sun, and then only rarely.
