OK, this is my story and I'm sticking to it. I brought my lap top along because Dabney has a wireless network and I can get my internet stuff done and Ginny can communicate with the office. Well, the story is a little involved. Seems that Dabney has been using a wireless network that actually belongs to the neighbors. I am not sure how she finally figured it out except that she noticed that her wireless router wasn't connected to anything. That was a definite clue.

Well, we decided to just use the neighbor's and call it good. That was until this morning when the neighbor's wireless went on the blink. We decided to hook up Dabney's router and use that. Good idea, but a minor problem arose. Her son Bill had set it up originally, and that setup included a password. Dabney tried all the Dixon family passwords she could think of, but no joy. So why not just call Bill? Well, Bill is in Oman working for Schlumberger. Dabney tried to call him and sure enough, she got through. So we now had the password and pretty soon we were in business.

Now here is the thing to contemplate. Why did it take three adults (Ginny included) who all have PhDs several hours to come to the conclusion that a simple call to Oman would save tons of trouble, consternation and befuddlement? When it comes to computers, there is nothing that a 17 year old kid can't fix.

Might be a friendly act to tell the neighbor that their connection is unsecured. There have been cases of all types of nasty stuff put up on the Web over unsecured wireless that when traced back to the originating point is at best a considerable embarrassment and at worse felony charges to fight.

An entire volume of the Texas Penal Code is devoted to "theft of services." Communication by telephone is so old-fashioned! At this point I am clamming up---but not on the Hood Canal.
