Day Eighteen

It was a short hop to Dayton where we will spend three days. Our original intent was to visit the Indiana State Museum on the way out of town. Unfortunately, it is closed on Mondays. So it goes and off we went. Objective was the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

This place is huge. Upon arriving just before mid day, we spent some time deciding what to see and in what order. There are four giant hangars full of airplanes. There are free guided tours and there are four 3D movies. It looked like we could do all the tours and see the three movies we were interested in during the day and a half we expected to be there. And so we set off for the guided tours of Hangar 3 (Cold War) and Hangar 4 (presidential aircraft, space and research and development). The tours lasted about 90 minutes and were excellent. When there is a tour available we take it.You can ask questions of the guide but you can't ask questions of signs. At the very end of the day we saw a 3D movie about D-Day. It was good.

Today's photo is of the B-36. A strategic bomber that didn't stay in service too long. It was huge because the H-Bombs of the time were enormous. It had six reciprocating engines and four turbojet engines. Definitely an aluminum overcast.
